Yet Another Case of "Think Before You Tweet" ? NASCAR Driver Disgusts Breastfeeding Advocates With Twitter Rant

Photo: EraPhernalia Vintage/Creative Commons

Breasts. We see them everywhere, nowadays. Television, movies, magazines ? they're pretty much impossible to miss, even if you try really hard. NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne is probably a fan himself, but he managed to find at least one set to be offensive enough to turn 'em into a personal PR nightmare.

Kahne infuriated the nursing-friendly masses when he tweeted his uncensored opinion regarding a mother breastfeeding her son at a grocery store. Apparently, "One boob put away one boob hanging" was so offensive to him that he felt it warranted international publicity. After referencing the incident as "nasty," he claimed that he no longer felt like shopping or eating after witnessing the public display of nudity. The Twitter debacle escalated when one of Kahne's followers begged to differ with his opinion (using some mild profanity), to which he responded with more profanity. As you can imagine, nursing advocates and people in general are angry about his attitude and the way he handled himself on Twitter.

So, here's what I don't understand about this situation (aside from the disgustingly rude commentary): guys are supposed to like boobs, right? It seems to me that spotting one out in public would count as a freebie, of sorts. I'm not saying that this woman couldn't have benefited from the use of a nice nursing cover, but I find it hard to believe that it's any more offensive to witness a mother breastfeeding her child than it is to see the backsides of people who can't be bothered to wear belts or pants that fit (I saw at least four today in public places).

It remains to be seen how Kahne's reputation will be affected by this rant, if at all. There are certainly plenty of people who agree with his point of view, even if it was expressed in a tactless manner. He has already issued a formal apology, of course, which was clearly written by a seasoned publicist if the correct use of grammar and punctuation are indicators.

So how do you feel about public breastfeeding? Do you think that Kahne's comments were justified, or did you find his views to be majorly offensive?

Israel receives UK censure for building new homes

Friday 30th December, 2011

The British government has condemned Israel's plan to build new homes in Jerusalem.

UK criticism follows a statement by France, which has also been angered by the plans for more settlement units in areas which were taken over by Israel in 1967.

Britain's Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, has described Israel's approval of the new construction projects in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan as "counter-productive to peace efforts."

He said the step by Israeli authorities could only lead to a lack of trust from the Palestinian Authority.

Mr Burt referred to the Israeli announcement as "provocative and deeply counter-productive in the resumption of direct negotiations."

The first stage of the approval process for three controversial construction projects was passed on Wednesday.

Israel is said to be planning 130 Jewish housing units on the border between Gilo and Beit Safafa.

Suarez given 1-match ban for obscene gesture

updated 9:01 a.m. ET Dec. 28, 2011

LIVERPOOL, England - Liverpool striker Luis Suarez will serve a one-match ban after making an obscene gesture toward Fulham fans during a Premier League match.

Suarez was photographed walking from the field after Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Fulham with his middle finger raised on Dec. 5. The Uruguayan will miss Friday's home match against Newcastle.

Also, the club was fined $31,000 and warned about future conduct after its players harangued referee Kevin Friend over his decision to send off midfielder Jay Spearing during the same match.

Meanwhile, Suarez is considering whether to appeal against an eight-match ban for racial abuse of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Chris Lilley Brings 'Angry Boys' To America

One of Australia's most famous comics, Chris Lilley, is rapidly losing his anonymity in the United States. Best known for such cult mockumentaries as "We Can Be Heroes" and "Summer Heights High," Lilley now has a third series, "Angry Boys," which premieres Jan. 1 on HBO.

Not only does he write all his own material, but Lilley, 37, also takes on multiple characters -- male, female, old, young, Caucasian, Asian and Polynesian. In "Angry Boys," he plays identical twin brothers, a sur?ng champion, an American rapper, a Japanese mother, a manager of a skateboard professional and a tough juvenile center worker nicknamed Gran. A modern-day Peter Sellers, he offers biting commentary on contemporary life while making viewers laugh uncontrollably.

The self-effacing comic is down to earth and admittedly a little overwhelmed by all the recent attention. Lilley spoke to The Huffington Post about "Angry Boys," his U.S. fans and what it was like to see his face up in Times Square.

How do you come up with all the different characters for your shows?
It's just a long process. I just write the scripts for quite a long time. Usually they evolve from the framework of the series. This one was about Daniel and Nathan [the identical teen brothers] and the heroes they had on their wall -- their posters -- and the idea of jumping into that. That opened up a new category of characters. It just sort of evolved over time.

Do you research the characters? If you decide to write about teenage boys, do you then hang out with some teenagers?
Yeah, I went to a lot of small country towns. I'd already played the characters in "We Can Be Heroes," but I wanted to make sure my observations were current. I went to country towns and arranged to hang out with families. People are just willing to tell you everything, and I filmed the interviews.

It's so funny that people open up to you.
In the early days, people were like, "Who's this weirdo?" But now people go, "Oh, I know what he's doing," and they're still quite willing to talk about it.

You play different ethnicities on your shows. Have you experienced any problems because of that?
I think in the context of a comedy show, you understand what it's about. I think my sort of comedy is about being a bit provocative, and I like something that's a bit confronting and shocking, so I think the racial stuff just works in that context.

It must be so wild to be on HBO.
It's really strange. I did "We Can Be Heroes," and I thought, "Oh, it'll be this weird little cult thing," which it was in Australia. It had a really small audience. And then I got a call from HBO, and they said, "Come on over." I didn't really know what HBO was, just vaguely -- "Oh, it's a TV thing" -- but I didn't get what they did. They just sat me down and said, "Whatever you do next, we want it to be an HBO show." They were just straight on-board. And I stupidly said, "Oh no, I'm doing a show about an Australian high school. I don't need you." They told me they wanted to buy it and still wanted me to do something for them.

It was really exciting, but I was sort of ignorant to the enormity of it. I think having been in the States a little while ago and seeing the Times Square billboard and a billboard on Sunset Boulevard, just seeing how they're getting behind it, it's pretty exciting. The whole thing is pretty surreal. Not what I expected.

I heard you have some celebrity fans.
It's so weird. I've been contacted by Selena Gomez, Katy Perry and Russell Brand. I met Guy Pearce, and he said, "Oh, Adam Sandler loves your stuff. He tries to get everyone to watch it. He's always giving the DVD to people." I was like, "That's so weird." I'd be terrified if I had to meet all these people.

Were you recognized much when you were in the States?
It's all about "Summer Heights High," people calling out to Mr. G. [a character from that series]. I was taking a photo of myself in front of the billboard in L.A., and this girl drove past in a car and screamed out, "Mr. G! What are you doing?" It was a bit awkward. I didn't want her to think I was loving myself too much.

Any plans to do a U.S. version of any of your shows?
No. That's initially what I got asked to do. The idea of remaking something for America does not appeal to me at all. I get the reason to do it, because it opens up the audience, but I'm much more interested in being true and doing what I know and love.

Taylor Lautner 'Out & Proud' People Cover A Fake

Fabricated cover touts an exclusive interview with the 'Twilight' actor about his sexuality.
By Gil Kaufman

The fake Taylor Lautner <i>People</i> magazine cover

The January 7 cover of People magazine that touts an exclusive interview with "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner about his sexuality is a fake.

The mocked-up cover hit the Web on Monday and instantly raised eyebrows with its claims of an exclusive story titled "Out & Proud." A spokesperson for People confirmed to GossipCop.com that the cover — complete with other celeb images that are five years old — is "absolutely fake" but would not comment further when contacted by MTV News.

The Internet joke that began with a Twitter post comes just a few months after GQ Australia was forced to issue an apology to the actor after he took issue with a line of questioning in the interview. The actor was asked whether he was hit on during a meeting with director Gus Van Sant and "Milk" writer Dustin Lance Black, who are both openly gay.

"It's not a coincidence that there was a writer, a director and an actor at dinner," Lautner told GQ about the professional meal. "No, definitely not. I think they know I'm straight. But they're great guys. They're a lot of fun."

Days after the interview made its way online; Black took to his blog to weigh in on the magazine's line of questioning. "Really Mr. GQ writer? I'm curious, will you be asking all of the handsome actors I've ever had the privilege of working with or meeting if I made passes at them as well?" he wrote. "I'd love to be there when you ask Sean Penn that same question. Or, Mr. GQ writer, were you projecting your own unprofessional desires onto me and Gus? Perhaps? Or worse still, are you a homophobe?

"Above and beyond this clear attack on my character, I'm shocked that GQ would allow their writer to lean on the scurrilous, outdated stereotype that gay men are by nature sexual predators," he continued. "I mean, would you have asked this same question if it were Diablo Cody and Kathryn Bigelow at dinner with Mr. Lautner? Leaning on lies, myths and stereotypes about gay people is hateful, harmful and outdated."

The combination of the blowback from Black and other Internet commenters forced the magazine to issue an apology on its Facebook page.

"We've seen some of the comments floating around regarding our recent interview with Taylor Lautner and apologise if anyone was offended by anything in the article. It certainly wasn't our intention to paint anyone in the story as a sexual predator," the statement reads. "The point we were actually trying to push was that Taylor is irresistible to virtually everyone — regardless of sexuality or gender. Hence the film crew cheering at his shirtless scenes while shooting 'Twilight,' and Mark Wahlberg deeming him better looking than Leonardo DiCaprio."

Intelligence firm Stratfor reels after data breach. What did hackers get?

Stratfor is cooperating with law enforcement after hackers stole credit card information from its subscriber list, and experts say any attempt by the data thieves to help charities will probably backfire.

The risks of cyber break-ins were exposed again over the holiday weekend as the firm Strategic Forecasting, known as Stratfor, faced an intrusion by hackers that compromised client data and credit card numbers.

The private firm provides analysis of geopolitical and security issues to clients who range from the US military to large corporations. Stratfor is based in Austin, Texas.

Hackers breached the firm's computer systems, claiming to act as the group known as Anonymous, which has perpetrated other cyberattacks this year.

The online infiltrators released thousands of credit card details, passwords, and home addresses from Stratfor's private client list, via the information-sharing website Pastebin.

This data breach is not just embarrassing for a prominent purveyor of intelligence, but also potentially worrisome for Stratfor's clients.

Stratfor is in damage-control mode following the breach. Its website is closed for maintenance. It has warned clients via e-mail about the risk to data such as credit cards. It is working with law enforcement to pursue the data thieves.

The firm also sought to reassure clients that the hackers did not gain access to all types of data.

"Contrary to this assertion the disclosure was merely a list of some of the members that have purchased our publications and does not comprise a list of individuals or entities that have a relationship with Stratfor beyond their purchase of our subscription-based publications," the firm said in an e-mail to members on Christmas Day, according to news reports.

The hackers announced their intention to use the credit cards for charitable donations. Experts on data security say that any "Robin Hood" goal of the attack will likely backfire.

"These actions will just end up hurting the charities, not helping them," writes Mikko Hypponen of F-Secure in a blog post. "When credit card owners see unauthorized charges on their cards, they will report them to their bank or credit card company. Credit card companies will do a chargeback to the charities, which will have to return the money. In some cases, charities could be hit with with penalties. At the very least, they will lose time and money in handling chargebacks."

One goal of the hack may be to harass an array of Stratfor clients who include members of the US military and intelligence communities.

Mixed signals about the role of Anonymous emerged Saturday, as some online posts denied the group was behind the attack.

A statement purporting to come from Anonymous said the group would not target Stratfor. "As a media source, Stratfor's work is protected by the freedom of press, a principle which Anonymous values greatly," the statement said. It said the perpetrators were seeking to portray Stratfor "in false light as a company which engages in activity similar to HBGary."

The data security firm HBGary faced a cyberattack earlier this year,?after one of its executives said publicly that he hoped to identify?members of Anonymous.

Whoever is behind the attack, the incident underscores the vulnerabilities in computer networks that hackers can exploit.

The issue of cybersecurity has grown increasingly important to both government and corporations, and some members of Congress are calling for greater cooperation between the public and private sectors.

Two weeks ago, Rep. Peter King (R) of New York and Dan Lungren (R) of California introduced a bill that, Mr. King said, is designed to protect "our critical infrastructure without a heavy-handed and burdensome regulatory approach that could cost American jobs."

The Promoting and Enhancing Cybersecurity and Information Sharing Effectiveness Act (PrECISE Act), would set up a private sector body to share threat information with the government "while also protecting privacy and civil liberties," the bill sponsors say.

North Korea Analysts See This Man Emerging As ... - Business Insider

Jang Song Thaek stands on the left

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea on Sunday aired footage showing the uncle and key patron of anointed heir Kim Jong Un wearing a military uniform with a general's insignia ? a strong sign he'll play a crucial role in helping the young man take over power and uphold the "military-first" policy initiated by his late father, Kim Jong Il.

The footage on state television shows Jang Song Thaek in uniform as he pays respects at Kim Jong Il's body lying in state at Kumsusan Memorial Palace. Seoul's Unification Ministry says it's the first time Jang, usually seen in business suits, has been shown wearing a military uniform on state TV.

Little by little, North Korea is offering hints on the details of Kim Jong Un's rise and the future composition of his inner circle as millions continue to mourn for his father, who died one week ago. North Korea has also begun hailing Kim Jong Un as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military as it ramps up its campaign to install him as ruler.

The new title, a public show of support from top military leadership and the symbolic appearance of Jang in uniform send a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy for the time being.

South Korean intelligence has reportedly predicted Kim Jong Un's aunt Kim Kyong Hui, a key Workers' Party official, and her husband Jang, who is a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, will play larger roles supporting the heir.

Jang and his wife have risen to the top of North Korea's political and military elite since the succession campaign began two years ago. Both 65, they also have the weight of seniority so important in a society that places a premium on age and alliances.

Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

Earlier, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, urged Kim Jong Un to accept the top military post: "Comrade Kim Jong Un, please assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people."

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. His father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on the grandson.

Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea in 1948, retains the title of "eternal president" even after his death in 1994.

Son Kim Jong Il ruled as chairman of the National Defense Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People's Army and general secretary of the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of discussions with the U.S. on food aid and restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program. Chronically short of food and suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials had been asking for help feeding its people even as North Koreans prepared for 2012 celebrations marking Kim Il Sung's 100th birthday.

North Korea has emphasized the Kim family legacy during the sped-up succession movement for Kim Jong Un. State media invoked Kim Il Sung in declaring the people's support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il's ascension to "supreme commander" exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

At the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Kim Jong Un and senior commanders paid silent tribute to Kim Jong Il, "praying for his immortality," KCNA said. The military also pledged its loyalty to Kim Jong Un, the report said.

"Let the whole army remain true to the leadership of Kim Jong Un over the army," KCNA reported ? a pledge reminiscent of those made when Kim Jong Il was named supreme commander.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, comes amid displays of grief across North Korea. The official mourning period lasts until after Kim's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

In Pyongyang, workers at beverage kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colorful thick parkas. A throng of North Koreans climbed steps and placed flowers and wreaths in a neat row below a portrait of Kim Jong Il as solemn music filled the air and young uniformed soldiers, their heads shaved, bowed before his picture.

A sobbing Jong Myong Hui, a Pyongyang citizen taking a break from shoveling snow, told AP Television News that she came out voluntarily to "clear the way for Kim Jong Il's last journey."

Despite the grief, there are signs that the country is beginning to move on, with people going to work and "not giving way simply to sorrow," KCNA said. "They are getting over the demise of their leader, promoted by a strong will to closely rally around respected Comrade Kim Jong Un."

The Korean peninsula has remained in a technical state of war since the Koreas' 1950-53 conflict, but two groups from South Korea have permission from the South Korean government to visit the North to pay their respects, Unification Ministry spokesman Choi Boh-seon said Saturday in Seoul.

One group will be led by the widow of former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and the other by the wife of a late businessman with ties to the North.

On Sunday, North Korea accused South Korea of blocking many other groups from visiting Pyongyang to pay respects, warning the action would trigger "unpredictable catastrophic consequences" in relations between the countries. The statement by an unidentified spokesman at the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification was carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

Seoul's Unification Ministry said it will allow only the two groups to visit the North.

Boston student re-united with $170,000 violin (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Christmas came early for a Boston music student who was reunited with the $170,000 violin she forgot in the overhead compartment of a regional commuter bus she rode last week, police said.

Muchen Hsieh, a student at the New England Conservatory in Boston, had traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, arriving at roughly 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

Christine O'Brien, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia police, who helped Hsieh track down the missing instrument, said then came a moment of sheer panic for the student.

O'Brien said Hsieh realized she had forgotten the instrument after she was picked up from the bus station. She blamed her absent-mindedness on travel fatigue.

Hsieh called the bus company, Megabus, roughly 30 minutes after she arrived but the bus had already left the Philadelphia station, O'Brien said. Hsieh also notified police, making a plea for the instrument's recovery, O'Brien said.

The 176-year-old instrument, on loan to Hsieh from a Taiwanese cultural foundation, was found by bus cleaners in the same compartment in which Hsieh left it. They put it in storage, and police returned it to Hsieh on Friday.

Hsieh joins the ranks of esteemed musicians who have mislaid or forgotten their valuable and sometimes priceless instruments. World renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma once left his in a cab.

One German string player required medical attention from the stress caused when he left his violin, worth roughly $1.4 million, on a commuter train in 2010.

It is not unusual for students at Hsieh's school to have such valuable instruments, Ellen Pfeifer, spokeswoman for the New England Conservatory, told the Boston Globe.

"Most of our string players, whether violinists, cellists, or violists, have pretty expensive, old, rare, instruments," Pfeifer said. "They frequently get them on loan from wealthy foundations."

The violin, which is in pristine condition, was made in 1835 by Vincenzo Jorio in Naples.

"This is certainly one of the most expensive items I have ever heard of and we were so relieved to get it back to the owner," said Megabus spokesman Bryony Chamberlain, adding that people often forget stowed-away items after long trips.

Hsieh had traveled from Boston to New York City and then to Philadelphia, Chamberlain said, a trip that could have taken more than six and a half hours.

"Each division has incidents of lost items that rare -- but this is probably one of the most unique," police spokeswoman O'Brien said, adding that Hsieh put on a mini-concert for the officers who organized the recovery.

"She is very talented," O'Brien said.

Kid band Vazquez Sounds takes Mexico by storm (AP)

vaz MEXICO CITY ? Ten-year-old Angie Vazquez has become an Internet phenom belting out a soulful cover of Brit pop star Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." In an online video seemingly shot at home, her teenage brothers Abelardo and Gustavo play the keyboard, guitar and drums.

The video drew almost 18 million views, interviews on Mexico's major television networks and a mention on Good Morning America. Within weeks of its Nov. 11 posting, the so-called Vazquez Sounds signed a contract with Sony Music Mexico. They released their first album this week that includes another Internet smash cover, of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You."

Their nearly overnight success online evokes the now legendary saga of Canadian 'tween idol Justin Bieber, who was discovered after his mother posted online amateur footage of him crooning and strumming.

"We make a lot of videos of a lot of things, but my son Abelardo wanted to record this song and share it with friends and family," said father Abelardo Vazquez in a telephone interview from the family's hometown of Mexicali, on the California border. "We really didn't expect the cover to become such a phenomenon on the Web."

Before you call the Vazquez clan Mexico's version of Bieber-mania, consider this: The elder Abelardo Vazquez is a professional music producer instrumental in creating the sound of well-known Mexican bands such as Reik and Nikki Clan, also from the border.

The videos of Angie and her brothers in their home studio are also professionally produced, mixed and lighted, with slick camera work.

Abelardo Vazquez says he's not driving his kids into the music business, though he acknowledges they've had a leg up.

"My kids have had a musical education since they were very young, because I have worked producing groups for many years," the father said.

When the video sparked interest in a few million people beyond the Vazquez's immediate circle, the decision to cut a CD was natural, Vazquez said.

He added that he retains total control over the project, and Sony music is working as a distributor.

"The contract with Sony isn't the traditional type," Vazquez said. "It isn't the typical contract with record companies, in which they used to control the artists' career. This is a family project."

Although Vazquez has had an eight-year relationship with Sony, Roberto Lopez, president of the label, said he and his team were unaware of the Vazquez Sounds and first heard the group like everyone else ? on the Internet.

Working with such a young group poses special challenges and "very strong personal care," Lopez said.

"It is something special because they are children, and we want them to stay in school," he said. "The agreement was that their involvement in music, which has been going on for years now, would continue without affecting their lifestyle."

Vazquez said other record companies had expressed interest, but Sony was the only one that met his conditions for the kids. Cynics note that Sony is also the label that signed some of Vazquez's other acts.

The CD includes the original cover of "Rolling in the Deep," a remix of that crowd pleaser and, at least in its online version, a more wobbly cover of the Mariah Carey song. Coincidentally, it's the same song Bieber included in his holiday season "Under the Mistletoe" disc.

In the meantime, the Vazquez Sounds have been invited to perform on television programs in the United States, Italy and England.

But they can pick and choose.

"The kids are not obligated to do promotional work like other acts," said the elder Vazquez. "We want them to live a life like any other child their age."

Clashes between sect, police kill 61 in Nigeria (AP)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? Fighting between a radical Muslim sect and paramilitary forces in Nigeria has killed at least 61 people over several days of violence in the nation's northeast that has left churches bombed and people hiding in fear, authorities said.

In hard-hit Yobe state, where at least 50 people died, the government on Saturday ordered a dusk-till-dawn curfew following attacks by the sect known as Boko Haram. In Maiduguri, the capital of neighboring Borno state, bombs reduced at least three churches to rubble and raised fears of further attacks by a group that claimed Christmas Eve bombings last year that killed dozens.

The fighting began Thursday in the two states, with gunfire and explosions heard into the night and the following day in an arid region that borders Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, and the town of Potiskum bore the brunt of the violence.

In Damaturu, residents fled their homes near the city's central mosque ahead of a combined attack by soldiers and the federal police's feared Mobile Police, known as "kill-and-go" for their propensity for violence. The paramilitary forces raided the area in armored personnel carriers and tanks, with heavy gunfire marking their arrival.

"We were able to kill 12 of the Boko Haram armed sect and bombers," local police commissioner Lawan Tanko said. The police commissioner said officers also recovered Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and explosives.

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a mortuary official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter told The Associated Press at least 11 bodies had been brought in from the violence. Authorities blamed Boko Haram for firebombing at least three churches around the capital, attacks that killed one pastor and his young child.

This is just the latest in a series of bombings over the last year by Boko Haram. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, wants to implement strict Shariah law across a nation of more than 160 million people that is home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties. The sect is responsible for at least 465 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say. That, as well as its increasingly violent attacks, have some worried the group will carry out further attacks around Christmas and New Year's.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos claimed by Boko Haram killed at least 32 people and wounded at least 74 others.

With those attacks in mind, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital of Abuja issued a warning Friday to citizens to be "particularly vigilant" around churches, large crowds and areas where foreigners congregate.

Analysts say the government's response remains strained as President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the country's south, remains worried about alienating the country's predominantly Muslim north with heavy-handed tactics. In 2009, a military and police crackdown following rioting by Boko Haram members in and around Maiduguri left 700 people dead.

Yet since Thursday, authorities have been using paramilitary police and soldiers more freely. Tanko, the Yobe state police commissioner, said joint patrols by the military and police would continue.

"When you are fighting people you don't know, you cannot say that's the end of the exercise," Tanko said. "We are trying to ensure that will be the end, but we are monitoring what is going on. But we know we cannot specifically say that will be the end."

US Cellular launches the Huawei Ascend II next week, costs you nothing (after rebate)

Coming next week to a US Cellular website near you... we give you the Huawei Ascend II. The carrier's first Huawei device is no stranger on American soil, having spent a good five months on Cricket's lineup. While the handset was available for $180 with no contract on Cricket, US Cellular is offering it for free with a two-year commitment -- after a $100 mail-in rebate. Perhaps it's not as likely to induce salivation as we were hoping, but it may still be a temptation for a few smartphone fans on a budget that don't mind a contract. The Android 2.3 device, complete with a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 5MP camera and 600MHz CPU, is available online next week and will be offered in stores in early January.

Protesting villagers in China win rare compromise (AP)

BEIJING ? Southern Chinese authorities have given in to key demands of protesting villagers after a nearly two-week standoff with police, agreeing in a rare compromise to release detainees and return some confiscated land to farmers.

Guangdong's deputy Communist Party secretary Zhu Mingguo told Wukan village protest leader Yang Semao on Wednesday that four villagers being held by police would be released over the next few days, Yang told The Associated Press.

"So now we are cautiously optimistic," Yang said.

The significance of the authorities' unusual concession in Wukan depends on how the details are played out, but it could affect the way other protests are handled, particularly in the corner of coastal southern China that has seen periodic unrest over the last few years. To Wukan's northeast, the coastal town of Haimen saw a second day of protests Wednesday over a planned coal-fired power plant.

Conflicts over land disputes and other issues in much of Guangdong province have been intense because the area is among China's most economically developed, pushing up land prices.

Underscoring the government's concerns about public discontent, China's security czar Zhou Yongkang met Wednesday with law and order officials and told them to improve the resolution of social conflicts and promote fair and honest law enforcement, state media reported.

In Wukan, Zhu, the provincial official, also told Yang and another village representative that the government would buy back 66 acres (27 hectares) of farmland that had been sold to a developer and return the land to the villagers, Yang said.

There is more farmland that has been sold and is not yet accounted for, Yang said, but he added that he thought the issue would be fairly addressed by higher authorities.

"I believe that the central government is attaching great importance to this incident and they won't let us down and they won't tolerate the lower-level officials' irresponsibility," Yang said.

Wukan, a village of nearly 20,000, has for months been the site of simmering protests by locals who say officials sold farmland to developers without their consent. Villagers drove out local officials and police almost two weeks ago after key village representatives were taken away.

One of the detainees later died in police custody, further angering villagers, who believe he was beaten. Authorities say Xue Jinbo died of cardiac failure. In another concession, Zhu agreed to launch a new investigation into Xue's death, Yang said.

In a further sign that tensions were easing, police withdrew Tuesday night from road checkpoints they had set up, while villagers removed the tree trunks they had used to block the road, Yang said.

The reasons for the provincial government's apparently softer approach in the Wukan dispute are unclear, but it marks a dramatic turnaround from days past.

Up until Wednesday, officials had employed intimidation tactics common in such disputes. Riot police raided the village two weeks ago and took away leaders and set up road blocks to prevent food from being transported in. Officials blamed the unrest on "foreign forces" and threatened to crack down on protest leaders.

But the villagers refused to be cowed and issued an ultimatum at the start of the week, saying they would march to the government offices of the nearby city of Lufeng on Wednesday if authorities did not meet their demands. That would have been a direct challenge to police who have set up checkpoints on main roads outside the village.

Yang said the march was called off after the meeting with the provincial official. "Since Zhu gave us a good answer, we should give him some face," he said.

In the town of Haimen, a large group of protesters blocked a highway and set trees on both sides of the road on fire on Wednesday to demand a response from the government to their demands to stop the construction of a coal-fired power plant, said one of the protesters, a man surnamed Yu.

It was the second day of protests in the seaside town. In response to Tuesday's protests, the local government said it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, according to a report by the local Shantou Daily newspaper which could not be immediately verified.

Protesters were also enraged by reports that two had died during clashes with police Tuesday. A man at the Shantou government office surnamed Wu said no one had died and refused to answer any more questions.

On Wednesday, riot police, paramilitary police and firefighters used tear gas and electric batons to try to break up the protest on the highway, said another protester, a 20-year-old woman named Yang Wanqing.

"We're not afraid, we don't care about their warnings," Yang said by phone. "We are not just thinking about the present, we are worrying about our future. In the future the pollution from the plant will be very bad."

Video: Gingrich, Romney avoid attacks in GOP debate

>>> chuck todd is our political director and chief white house correspondent. good morning.

>> good morning. the candidates attacked each other and turned into most negative week of the campaign. final debate lacked that same negative energy . instead the front-runners played iowa nice.

>> today i think it is a big step forward and i think governor romney deserves some of the credit.

>> governor romney , you want to respond to that compliment?

>> yes, thank you.

>> reporter: so went the final debate. the two leading candidates, mitt romney and newt gingrich , choosing to avoid any clashes. the only veiled reference to their feud, gingrich poking fun at himself for being zany.

>> zany is great.

>> reporter: a word used by romney at "the new york times."

>> i get accused of using language too strong so i've been standing here editing. i'm very concerned about not appearing to be zany, and --

>> reporter: each time romney and gingrich got a question designed to get them to spar with each other, they shifted the focus often to president obama .

>> this president doesn't know how the economy works. to create jobs it helps to have created jobs.

>> i think in seven debates barack obama will not have a leg to stand on.

>> reporter: the positive debate is a marked contrast from most of the tv ads airing in iowa .

>> -- beginning witch was fined $300,000 for ethics violations.

>> it's about serial hypocrisy.

>> $10,000 bet?

>> not too many of us in iowa place $10,000 bets.

>> reporter: the latest ads stay most mostly positive.

>> others seem to be focused on attacks rather than move the country forward. that's up to them.

>> reporter: they got hit repeat repeatedly by the other candidates.

>> he personally as governor issued gay marriage licenses.

>> i want to make it very clear, i have been a champion of protecting traditional marriage .

>> reporter: michele bachmann and the former speaker questions about freddie mac .

>> he was taking out $1.6 million to influence senior republicans to keep the scams going.

>> sometimes people ought to have facts before they make wild allegations.

>> reporter: bachmann one time iowa front-runner now trailing badly was the most aggressive, even tangling with ron paul over the issue of nuclear weapons in iran.

>> we ought to sit back and not jump the gun and believe we aren't going to be attacked.

>> i believe i've never heard a more dangerous answer for american security than the one we just heard.

>> i think this wild goal to have another war in the name of defense is the dangerous thing.

>> reporter: but for the most part the debate was more kumbaya than contentious w a focus on president obama .

>> it's president obama we've got to talk about. he's unveiled himself as the president, not the right person to lead this country.

>> our only opponent is barack obama and we need to come out of this process beating him is collectively what we have to do.

>> the romney campaign is trying to show they have momentum again. they've nabbed a pretty big endorsement, south carolina governor nicki hayley, and they hope that momentum campaigns to him in the season.

What Exactly Will an iPad 3 Look Like? (NewsFactor)

Even while iPad 2s are flying off store shelves this holiday shopping season, rumors are swirling around what the iPad 3 will look like -- and when it will be released.

As usual, mum is the word at Apple on both fronts. But that's not keeping analysts from speculating. The rumors suggest everything from a full feature retina display to 4G LTE connectivity to better cameras to the addition of the Siri virtual assistant and beyond. But who confirmed Apple was even going to launch a new iPad in the spring? Nobody yet.

"It's important to note that given Apple's sales so far, Apple does not need an iPad 3," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis. "When Apple came out with the iPhone 4S the entire blogging world went nuts because it did not appear to be a radical improvement. But the iPhone 4S has sold millions of units the first day it was available and has posted extremely strong sales ever since."

An iPad 3 Wish List

Greengart's point: Apple is competing in an environment in which the currency is apps, cloud services and an intuitive user interface -- and Apple is leading in two out of those three areas. (Apple cedes the cloud services throne to Amazon, but is still strong in that area.) With this in mind, Apple has no imperative to broker radical change with the iPad.

Despite Apple's dominance, however, Greengart does have a wish list for the iPad 3. For starters, he -- and many others -- would like to see a higher density display that would offer higher resolutions. When compared with the iPhone 4, the iPad's text looks fuzzy.

Then there's the camera. Although most iPad users aren't using the tablet as a primary camera, those who even play with the camera quickly discover that the resolution doesn't match the screen. "You end up with ragged-looking images. While this is no great loss in terms of real-world use cases, it doesn't look right," Greengart said. "Everything else on the iPad looks right. That would be another obvious area of improvement."

Like almost all Apple products, Greengart expects future versions of the iPad to be thinner and lighter. But again, Apple is not under massive pressure to innovate in this area. When comparing the iPad 2 with its tablet competition, the device remains one of the thinner and lighter tablets on the market.

iPad Price Cuts?

One of the larger questions surrounding an iPad 3 launch is how it will affect pricing on the iPad 2. Will the iPad 2 stay in the line-up as a lower-end product with a starting price closer to $399? It's possible.

"Apple has certainly made moves like that in the past with some of its other product lines. But there is no burning need to do so. Apple is not being dramatically undercut on price in most of the nine- and 10-inch competition," Greengart said.

"Apple will see more competition from the likes of Amazon and Barnes & Noble, which are offering smaller tablets with less capabilities but significantly lower prices. So it is possible that Apple will respond to that by having an entry model at a lower price point."

Big endorsement: Romney picks up SC governor's aid (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Challenging Newt Gingrich's claim to South Carolina, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney charged into the state Friday with a key endorsement from the tea party-aligned governor, a packed campaign schedule and plans to start airing TV ads in the early primary state.

The show of force by Romney was a clear signal he intends to compete aggressively in a state that stymied him in 2008 and that Gingrich has made a cornerstone of his own campaign.

"It's a real kickoff of a major portion of our campaign," Romney told reporters after accepting an endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. "I want to win in South Carolina."

While Romney was planting his flag in a Gingrich stronghold, the former House speaker from neighboring Georgia spent the day off the campaign trail, with a book-signing near Washington and private family events in the capital city.

On Friday and in the previous night's debate, Romney steered clear of pointed attacks on Gingrich, entering the final sprint to the Jan. 3 leadoff Iowa caucuses with an air of confidence after a week of assailing Gingrich's leadership, judgment and temperament. That pivot suggested the Romney camp believes Gingrich's recent rise in opinion polls may have leveled off and Romney can campaign closer to his early stance as the all-but-inevitable nominee.

The New Hampshire primary follows one week after Iowa, then comes South Carolina on Jan. 21. While Romney was still in Iowa on Friday, Haley announced she was supporting him as the best Republican candidate to take on President Barack Obama in the battle for the White House next year.

South Carolina wasn't kind to Romney in 2008. He spent millions here only to come in fourth after disappointing losses in Iowa and New Hampshire. Critics suggested his Mormon faith caused problems with the state's significant conservative Christian vote.

On Friday, Haley argued that her state was past all that. "South Carolina just elected a 38-year-old Indian female for governor," said Haley, who was raised Sikh and converted to Christianity. "What the people of South Carolina care about is values and family and faith."

Not that Friday was all smooth sailing for Romney.

After more than a week of criticizing Gingrich as a loose cannon likely to be savaged by Democrats, Romney opened himself to similar complaints by saying he didn't understand Medicaid until he started working in government. One of the principal avenues of criticism against Romney is that he's spent his life among the privileged and is out-of-touch.

"You know, I have to admit I didn't know all the differences between these things before I got into government," Romney said, referring to the federal-state health care program for the poor, at a campaign stop in Iowa.

Romney later told reporters traveling with him to South Carolina that he understood the program but hadn't quite grasped how it was funded. He called his earlier comment a "self-deprecating understatement."

Meanwhile, he had no harsh words for Gingrich ? seeming content to leave that to his fellow Republican rivals and a political action committee that supports Romney. They have gone after Gingrich aggressively since he claimed the lead in national and Iowa polls this month.

The closest Romney came Friday was a veiled reference to the former congressional leader and longtime Washington consultant.

"What concerns me is that we have in Washington, D.C., a class of people who spent their whole time in Washington," Romney said.

His introductory South Carolina TV spot is upbeat.

The ad cost is modest, just $65,000 on cable television this week and next. But it signals an effort to cut into Gingrich's South Carolina showing heading into the bigger Florida primary, set for Jan. 31.

Romney was confident and relaxed campaigning Friday, traveling with his wife, Ann, and bringing reporters along on the campaign's charter flights for the first time this year.

Gingrich is still facing withering criticism from Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Romney also hopes to slow Gingrich heading into New Hampshire, a must-win state for Romney, who was governor in next-door Massachusetts. Romney, who has led comfortably in New Hampshire, began airing a new ad there featuring his conversations with New Englanders concerned about the economy.

Romney already had set aside campaign money to step up his South Carolina effort, although the focus will probably remain on advertising, not additional campaign staff.

No doubt in the works for South Carolina is another Romney ad before the Jan. 21 primary, one featuring Haley.

Haley's ties with Romney run deep. She endorsed him in 2008 when she was in the Legislature. Romney returned the favor when she ran for governor in 2010.

"Neither South Carolina nor the nation can afford four more years of President Obama, and Mitt Romney is the right person to take him on and get America back on track," Haley, a rising GOP star, said after announcing her endorsement on Fox News Channel.

She later told The Associated Press that Romney "has led in making decisions," a point Romney stresses in suggesting his decades in business and term as governor qualify him most for the GOP nomination.

Romney has focused heavily on winning New Hampshire's primary on Jan. 10. But he has been spending time, too, in Iowa, where he finished a disappointing second to Arkansas' Mike Huckabee after spending $10 million on his 2008 Iowa campaign.

The candidates ? except for Gingrich ? were making final pitches to voters on Friday before people begin focusing on the holidays.

Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were taking their argument that Gingrich isn't conservative enough to lead the party to Iowa voters on separate bus tours in the state's conservative but lightly populated northwest.

Although Gingrich was off the trail, his campaign drew unwanted attention after two New Hampshire Republicans alleged in complaints filed with state authorities that they had received illegal political telephone calls from the Gingrich operation.

New Hampshire law prevents political campaigns from using recorded political messages, or "robo-calls," to contact residents who are registered on a national do-not-call list.

Gingrich's campaign denied wrongdoing.

Gaming&#39;s New Frontier After Zynga - Joseph Walker - News ...

In July of 2009, David Reid got a call from a recruiter who wanted to gauge his interest in joining a little-known start-up called Trion Worlds Inc. A gaming company founded a couple of years earlier by Lars Buttler, a former Electronic Arts executive, Trion had yet to release a product.

Trion, however, was said to be doing something big in the realm of massively multiplayer online games, or MMO, where players connected by the Internet do battle in fantastical virtual universes. Reid, a gregarious man whose short hair is the only indication of his past life as a U.S. Army lieutenant, had seen how social networks and smartphones were revolutionizing gaming, and he was interested in trying something new. But unlike some of his peers, Reid, 42, didn?t want to make these so-called casual games that were so often used to kill time while waiting on line at the grocery store.
