The SAG Awards, as we have noted, often have a curious way of letting us know what the Oscars are going to deliver. So when the Screen Actors Guild doled out its golden statuettes on Sunday night (January 29), we couldn't help but feel there were more than a few hints at how the Academy Awards might shake out in a few weeks.

What are we to make of the upset SAG win for "The Help" in outstanding cast in a movie, for instance? Where does this leave "The Artist," which had been looking increasingly, inevitably like the big champ come Oscar night, yet only won outstanding male performance (Jean Dujardin) at the SAGs?

Sudan frees South Sudan's oil tankers; dispute continues (Reuters)

JUBA/DUBAI (Reuters) ? Sudan released tankers loaded with South Sudanese oil that had been held at Port Sudan in a row over export transit fees, days after Khartoum seized crude from its new neighbor and offered it at a steeply discounted price.

Sudan's Oil Minister Awad al-Jaz said the release came as part of efforts to reach an agreement with South Sudan on the transit fees, but so far "we don't have any positive response from the other side."

South Sudan has shut down oil output in protest at the seizing of the cargoes, and talks between the two to reach a settlement broke down over the weekend.

The former civil war foes have failed to agree the value of the fee landlocked South Sudan should pay to pump oil north by pipeline for export from Port Sudan.

"The four ships that were being detained were released yesterday at 5:00 p.m.," South Sudan's Minister of Petroleum and Mining Stephen Dhieu Dau said by telephone.

"They were carrying oil for Vitol and Sinopec."

He added that 3.5 million barrels have been released but Sudan should now allow 5.4 million barrels to be lifted, indicating that the dispute was far from resolved.

"The ships are waiting," said Dae. "If they want to negotiate in good faith with us they should allow us to come and lift it."

The ships that have been released were already loaded and Sudan had held them from sailing. Separately, Sudan has sold off at least one tanker of crude seized from the South and has offered two other cargoes.

In addition to the three, at least seven tankers are still waiting at the port to lift December and January cargoes, raking up demurrage costs of $20,000-$22,000 per day, traders and shipbrokers said.

Two of the tankers that were freed were chartered by oil trading giant Vitol, an industry source told Reuters.

"The two tankers were freed on Sunday and they are carrying a total of 1.6 million barrels," said the industry source, declining to be identified because he is not authorized to talk to the media.

Oil is the lifeline of both countries' economies. The South controlled about 350,000 bpd of oil output when it became independent in July under a 2005 peace agreement that ended decades of civil war.

Oil provides about 98 percent of South Sudan's income and is vital for developing an already poor country devastated by years of civil war.

China is the biggest buyer of oil from the two countries and the biggest investor in South Sudan's oilfields.

Egypt plans to send delegation to U.S. as NGO furor mounts (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A Egyptian military team plans to visit the United States next week as Cairo's crackdown on pro-democracy organizations has called into question the future of U.S. aid to Egypt, American officials said on Friday.

The Egyptian delegation hopes to meet with officials at the State Department and the Pentagon. It will also hold talks on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers will soon consider a new request for aid to Egypt's military, which now runs about $1.3 billion per year, one official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Egyptian visit comes after Egypt's military-led authorities pounced on non-governmental organizations, including several funded by the U.S. government, and slapped travel bans on six American staffers including a son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former congressman.

Political analysts say the crackdown, along with questions over Egypt's emergency law and security forces' treatment of women protesters, has clouded the outlook for Egypt's fledgling democracy following last year's overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said American officials were pressing Egyptian authorities the crackdown, which she described as "bizarre." The Americans have demanded that Egypt lift travel restrictions placed on a number of foreign NGO staffers.

"We do not have progress since yesterday, I am sorry to report," Nuland said.

The six U.S. citizens work with the National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute. Both receive U.S. public funding and are loosely affiliated with the two major political parties in Washington.

"The assertions of the Egyptian government in these cases are that they are subject to a judicial process which is not complete," Nuland said. "Our message back is, 'Complete these formalities and let our people travel as soon as possible.'"

HIGH TENSION

Officials said a detailed Washington schedule for the Egyptian visit was still being worked out, adding that it was a regular staff delegation that was coming at a moment of high tension in the U.S.-Egypt relationship.

Other political sources said the Egyptians were expected to discuss the NGO issue on Capitol Hill, where a number of senators have warned the Egyptians that U.S. aid was at stake if action against the NGOs continues.

"Continued restriction of their activities and harassment of international and Egyptian staff will be looked at with great concern, particularly in light of Egypt's considerable U.S. assistance," 11 senators said in a letter to Egyptian Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi dated January 18.

President Barack Obama spoke with Tantawi on January 20 and stressed the importance of the NGOs, as well as Egypt's deteriorating economic situation and its request for $3.2 billion in support from the International Monetary Fund.

The Obama administration is finalizing its budget for the 2013 fiscal year, which will be presented on February 13 and is expected to include continued assistance for Egypt's military.

Lawmakers imposed conditions on the U.S. assistance given in 2012, requiring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to certify that the Egyptian government is supporting the transition to a civilian government. That includes holding free and fair elections and implementing policies to protect freedom of expression, association, and religion, and due process of law.

Clinton can waive this if it is in U.S. national security interests, but must notify Congress that she has done so.

"Those are decisions that are going to have to be made later on in the winter and spring," Nuland said. "These are points that we're obviously making clear to the Egyptians."

US Embassy: US citizen kidnapped in Nigeria freed (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? A U.S. citizen kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta has been freed after a week in captivity, the U.S. Embassy said Friday.

U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Deb MacLean told The Associated Press that the man had been released after being kidnapped in Warri in Delta state on Jan. 20. MacLean declined to offer any other details, citing privacy rules. Delta state police spokesman Charles Muka said he had not been informed about the man's release, as his company refused to cooperate with local authorities.

The freed hostage was identified as William Gregory Ock, 50, of Bowdon, Ga., by his sister, Dee Dee Patterson.

Patterson told the AP on Friday that the family had no details of his release.

"The only thing we know is that he is safe and he is in a secure location," Patterson said by telephone.

She had no information on when Ock would return home to Georgia.

It was not immediately clear whether a ransom had been paid to secure his release, though many companies working in the region carry kidnap insurance and simply pay a negotiated price to see their employees freed. Kidnappers had made contact with authorities previously and demanded a $333,000 ransom.

The attack Jan. 20 occurred outside a bank branch in Warri, one of the main cities in nation's Niger Delta, a region of mangroves and swamps where foreign oil companies pump 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day. The gunmen attacked Ock as he came outside, shooting his police escort to death before abducting him, Muka said.

Investigators believe the gunmen trailed him for some time before the attack, Muka said.

Foreign firms have pumped oil out of the delta for more than 50 years. Despite the billions flowing into Nigeria's government, many in the delta remain desperately poor, living in polluted waters without access to proper medical care, education or work.

In 2006, militants started a wave of attacks targeting foreign oil companies, including bombing their pipelines, kidnapping their workers and fighting with security forces. That violence waned in 2009 with a government-sponsored amnesty program promising ex-fighters monthly payments and job training. However, few in the delta have seen the promised benefits and criminal gangs still roam the region, increasingly targeting middle-class Nigerians.

In 2011, there were five reported kidnappings of U.S. citizens in Nigeria, according to a recent U.S. State Department travel warning about the country. The most recent occurred in November when two U.S. citizens and a Mexican were kidnapped from a Chevron Corp. offshore oil field and held for about two weeks, the State Department said.

A German working in the city of Kano in north Nigeria was abducted Thursday by unknown gunmen, authorities have said.

World stocks slide as US growth data disappoint (AP)

LONDON ? World stocks turned lower on Friday after official data showed the U.S. economic recovery was not as fast as many had hoped.

The Commerce Department said that the U.S. economy, the world's largest, grew at a modest 2.8 percent in the final three months of last year. While that is the fastest growth in 2011, economists had expected growth of 3 percent.

A cut in government spending was offset partly by a rise in inventories, which are expected to slow back down in the early months of 2012, hurting growth. After that, "growth will pick up again by late spring," said Harm Bandholz, chief U.S. economist at UniCredit Bank.

With the data suggesting the U.S. recovery would continue to be a slow process, investors sold off stocks to cash in on gains made so far this month.

Britain's FTSE 100 was down 1.0 percent to 5,735.64 while Germany's DAX fell 0.5 percent at 6,508.98 and France's CAC-40 lost 1.2 percent to 3,322.46. The euro was up 0.3 percent at $1.3142.

Wall Street edged lower on the open ? the Dow Jones industrial average fell 44 points to 12,691 and the S&P 500 3 points to 1,315.

Other economic and corporate news released Friday contributed to sour market sentiment.

Consumer products maker Procter & Gamble Co. cut its earnings outlook and Ford Motor Co. fell short of Wall Street expectations, while Japanese games and electronics companies Nintendo and NEC issued profit warnings.

In Europe, traders digested grim statistics from Spain showing more than 5 million people without jobs. The National Statistics Institute said the jobless rate shot up from 21.5 percent ? already the highest in the eurozone ? to 22.8 percent in the fourth quarter.

Attention was also focused on the resumption of talks to reach a deal on how Greece can avoid a catastrophic default on its debt. Greece and its bailout rescuers ? other countries that use the euro and the International Monetary Fund ? are asking private creditors to swap their Greek bonds for new ones with a lower value, interest rate and much longer maturity.

The two sides have so far disagreed over what interest rate the new bonds should take. Some negotiators have said they hope to have a deal this weekend, in time for a European leaders' meeting on Monday.

While investors appear to expect a deal at some point ? the euro was up and eurozone borrowing rates were down, suggesting a steady increase in confidence ? some worried that the crisis was far from over.

Portugal's markets have worsened in recent days on fears that its austerity efforts will not be enough to achieve its deficit-reduction targets and that it may end up like Greece, needing a second bailout effort and possibly a debt writedown.

Getting economies like Portugal to grow is fast becoming a priority and is expected to be one of the main topics of discussion at the European leaders' summit in Brussels on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Asian markets showed little momentum ahead of the weekend.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.1 percent to close at 8,841.22 while South Korea's Kospi rose 0.4 percent to 1,964.83. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.3 percent to 20,501.67 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.4 percent to 4,288.40.

Japanese exporters continued to be hit by a strong yen, which reduces the value of repatriated profits. The dollar fell to 76.81 yen from 77.49 yen.

Nintendo Corp., the Japanese gaming giant behind the Super Mario and Pokemon games, plummeted 4.1 percent, a day after it lowered its annual earnings forecast to a 65 billion yen ($844 million) loss. The company blamed the strong yen for much of the loss.

Japanese electronics company NEC Corp. plummeted 7.1 percent after announcing Thursday that it was slashing 10,000 jobs worldwide and would slide into the red for the full year.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 20 cents at $99.50 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 30 cents to finish at $99.70 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

Review: Software extras ease do-it-yourself taxes (AP)

NEW YORK ? It's never been easier to prepare your own tax return.

The software available for the 2012 tax season has been both expanded and made easier to use. This will make the annual chore quicker and reduce the chance of missing big deductions and important tax credits.

Close to 40 million taxpayers prepared their own returns online last year. That's up 14 percent from 2010 and nearly 24 percent from 2009, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Still, more than 33 million returns were submitted on paper forms in 2011, meaning there's still a large target market for software providers. Whether you're an old hand or trying e-filing for the first time, you'll find an array of software choices:

TurboTax

? Basic level starts at $19.95.

? Online and desktop versions available.

? Apps available for iPad, iPhone and Android phone.

? Live help available via phone and online chat.

This market-leading program is user-friendly and easy to navigate. That's a big plus for anyone who may be a little uncomfortable handling financial paperwork. It uses multiple graphics to depict various categories of deductions, such as a small house for mortgage, property taxes and related deductions and a graduation cap for education-related items.

It also asks simple questions that lead you to various points on the return and to additional forms to possibly include, without making it obvious what's happening.

Do-it-yourselfers who used Intuit Inc.'s TurboTax in past years should be able to call up their information from prior years when they log in. TurboTax also can grab prior-year return information from your computer if you used another company's software. The software compares results between years, which is another way to ensure you don't miss any deductions or credits you may qualify for.

TurboTax has added free live advice from tax professionals, through which you can ask questions via online chat or by telephone. It also still has its popular "community" questions and answers link.

Along with the free version, TurboTax has pricing tiers depending on an individual's needs. The basic level is $19.95 for a federal return. Prices rise to the Home and Business version for $74.95. Besides its online offerings, TurboTax software may also be purchased off the shelf at major office supply chains and other stores, starting at $29.99.

The company also is pushing its prepaid card as a way to receive your refund via direct deposit. If you choose to use it, you'll be entered into a contest to double your refund. The card comes with a $5.95 monthly fee unless you keep a balance of at least $50. It offers just one free ATM withdrawal per month and carries several other potential fees.

H&R Block At Home

? Basic level starts at $19.95.

? Online and desktop versions available.

? Apps available for iPad, iPhone and Android phone.

? Live help available via phone.

Still the nation's largest tax preparer, H&R Block Inc. made some gains on TurboTax last year with its online offerings. Its new software is easier to use than in the past, with simple guidelines and questions to help taxpayers navigate their returns.

Block's presentation is more businesslike, with fewer graphics and icons. Like its rival, it has numerous spots where you can choose to go it alone or rely on built-in guidance to ask questions about various deductions and credits.

The company this year also is introducing "Block Live," online prep done by one of its tax professionals using video chat. A simple federal form is free, and a standard 1040 starts at $99. State forms start at an additional $39.

A hybrid version called "Best of Both" allows you to complete your returns on your own time, then submit it to Block for a professional review. That extra level of service costs $79.95.

Returning customers may have their personal information loaded from past returns. The software is capable of extracting information from other software, if it is stored on your computer.

Like TurboTax, Block has a prepaid card for customers who don't have bank accounts and want to receive their refunds via direct deposit. Through Feb. 4, the company will allow its Emerald Card users to deduct the cost of their federal tax prep from their refunds at no charge.

Emerald Cards do not carry a monthly usage fee, but charge $2.50 for each ATM withdrawal and $1 for balance inquiries or denied withdrawals.

TaxAct

? Wide variety of free forms; basic level starts at $9.95.

? Online and desktop versions available.

? Apps available for iPad, iPhone and Android phone.

? Live help available via phone.

The third most popular software also is simple and easy and has the added appeal of showing you images of actual tax forms at certain stages in the process. For taxpayers who are used to preparing returns on paper forms, being able to see a 1040 or a Schedule A may help ease the transition to electronic filing.

Like its rivals, the software can transfer key data from last year's return even if it was prepared on another program.

TaxAct offers help answering questions via email and free phone help for those who buy the product. Free Edition users can email questions for free or purchase unlimited phone assistance for $7.95. Unlike some of the other free offerings, TaxAct offers forms for more complex returns in its free federal edition as well.

Like the others, a prepaid card is available. It can be loaded with the refund, minus the cost of the software. The card comes with a hefty $16.95 startup fee and charges $1.95 per ATM withdrawal.

___

Before you pay for software, you should determine if you qualify to file your federal return for free. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less in 2011 may choose software from 15 companies through the IRS Free File program. About 3 million people used Free File last year, but the IRS said 70 percent of taxpayers, or about 100 million, are eligible.

Free File software options include the most popular brands, TurboTax and H&R Block. Most of the participating companies also prepare state returns for free; some charge an additional fee. Details and links to the available software can be found at http://www.freefile.irs.gov.

It's also possible to file simple federal returns for free, mainly 1040EZ forms, using the websites of TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, Liberty Tax Service's e-Smart Tax and Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. All charge a fee for state returns, ranging from $19.95 with Liberty's e-Smart software to $27.95 with TurboTax.

One boon to using at-home software is that users can start and stop the process. This is particularly helpful for those who want to file early but are still waiting for W-2 and 1099 forms. Taxpayers can enter the details as their paperwork arrives, then file when their return is complete.

All of the major software options allow customers to start preparing their returns for free and only charge a fee when the return is filed. That makes it easier to compare different offerings to see which is the most comfortable to use.

NFLX stock jumps, as Netflix audience returns

Netflix regained 600,000 subscribers?after 800,000 left last summer following a rate increase. As the customer count climbs, so has the NFLX stock.

Netflix?has regained almost as many customers as it lost following an unpopular price increase, signaling that the video subscription service is healing from its self-inflicted wounds.

Fourth-quarter figures released Wednesday show?Netflix?Inc. ended December with 24.4 million subscribers in the U.S., up from 23.8 million at the end of September. That gain of about 600,000 customers compares with the loss of 800,000 subscribers last summer after it raised its U.S. prices as much as 60 percent.

The uptick is a positive sign for?Netflix?after several months of upheaval battered its stock. The shares reversed course Wednesday, surging nearly 16 percent.

The fourth-quarter performance should help bolster confidence in?Netflix?CEO Reed Hastings, who was skewered in Internet forums and analyst notes for miscalculating how subscribers would react to higher prices.

A contrite Hastings had promised that?Netflix?would lure back customers, and so far it has been even more successful than he forecast.

"You are never as smart or dumb as they say," Hastings said in a Wednesday interview. "We know we are just beginning to climb back in terms of consumer trust and affection."

The fallout from the earlier customer defections contributed to a 14 percent decrease in?Netflix's?fourth-quarter earnings.

Netflix?made $40.7 million, or 73 cents per share, in the final three months of last year. That compares with income of $47.1 million, or 87 cents per share, a year earlier.

Investors had been bracing for a bigger drop-off. Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast fourth earnings of 54 cents per share.

Revenue climbed 47 percent from the previous year to $876 million ? $19 million above analyst projections.

Netflix's?stock soared $15.08, or nearly 16 percent, to $110.12 in extended trading. It had ended regular trading up $2.37, or 2.6 percent, at $95.04. If the rally carries over into Thursday's trading,?Netflix's?stock could close at its highest level in three months.

The stock still has a long way to go to return to its peak of nearly $305, which was reached in July, about the same time that?Netflix?announced the price increase that outraged customers.

"It's still too early to know how much success?Netflix?is going to have this year, but seeing those gains in customers makes investors feel safer," said Frost & Sullivan analyst Dan Rayburn.

Now that the backlash over the higher prices has eased,?Netflix's?biggest challenge may be fending off competitive challenges to its primary business of streaming video over high-speed Internet connections.

Davos elite: Capitalism has widened income gap (AP)

DAVOS, Switzerland ? A four-year economic crisis has left societies battered and widened the gap between the haves and have-nots, financial leaders conceded Wednesday ? with one suggesting that Western capitalism itself may be endangered.

With the global economic outlook gloomy at best as Europe struggles with its debt crisis, there's a sense at the heavily guarded World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps that free markets are on trial.

There's a widespread acceptance that more must be done to convince critics that Western capitalism has a future and that it can learn the lessons of its massive failures.

For David Rubenstein, the co-founder and managing director of asset management firm Carlyle Group, leaders must work fast to overcome the current crisis or else different models of capitalism, such as the form practiced in China, may win the day.

"As a result of this recession, that's lasted longer than anyone predicted and will probably go on for a number more years ... we're gonna have a lot of economic disparities," said Rubenstein.

"We've got to work through these problems, if we don't do in 3 or 4 years ... the game will be over for the type of capitalism that many of us have lived through and thought was the best type," he added.

His stark appraisal may have been an outlier, but there was a clear defensive posture among many participants on this opening day of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

There were numerous references to the need to innovate, the need to consult with employees and the realization that power in the world is shifting from the west to the east. While the traditional industrial economies of the United States and Europe have limped through the last few years, often from one crisis to another, many economies in Asia and Latin America have been booming.

As Ben Verwaayen, the chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent, said, there's a "very different view" of capitalism in Brazil.

"This is a very different discussion depending where you are," Verwaayen said.

Many rejected the suggestion from Sharan Burrow, the general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, that capitalism has lost its "moral compass" and needed to be "reset." Still, representatives of the business community insisted they were learning from the mistakes that dragged the world into its deepest economic recession since the World War II.

Bank of America's CEO Brian Moynihan said the excesses of banks in the run-up to the banking crisis of 2008 reflected the economies they were operating in, so it was important that policymakers don't overreact.

Moynihan, whose bank was forced to back down on plans to start charging a $5 debit card fee after protests by the Occupy movement and others, said banks have "done a lot" to reduce excesses. He also noted that boom and bust cycles are a part of the Western capitalist structure.

Many outside the confines of the Davos conference center disagree, after years of crisis in which hundreds of millions of people have lost their jobs even as top executives have continued to reap huge pay packets.

Davos activists on Wednesday sent aloft big red weather balloons carrying a huge protest banner reading "Hey WEF, Where are the other 6.9999 billion leaders?"

The activists were from the Occupy WEF movement, a small group camping out in igloos here and following in the footsteps of the Occupy Wall Street movement that spread to cities around the world.

Davos is a hard-to-reach place to protest, tucked in the Swiss Alps. Some 2,600 of the world's most influential people are gathered for the forum this week, amid increasing worries about the global economy and social unrest due to rising income inequalities.

The CEO of accounting giant Deloitte, Joe Echevarria, talked about developing "compassionate capitalism."

"You're going to have to deal with regulation ? balancing the need to protect society along with stifling growth," he told The Associated Press in an interview. "I think that has to manifest itself through the choices that governments and businesses make."

While the bigwigs debated at Davos, key Greek bondholders were holding closed-door meetings in Paris to discuss how ? and whether ? to continue talks central to resolving Europe's debt crisis that would forgive 50 percent of Greece's enormous debt.

Mark Penn, global CEO of the public relations firm Burson-Marsteller, told AP "the whole crisis has raised larger questions about how is capitalism working, how do you redefine fairness in the 21st century?"

Later Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel may chart her course for Europe's crisis in her keynote speech at the Davos forum.

In an interview with six European newspapers published Wednesday, Merkel drove home the need for reform in debt-troubled eurozone nations instead of spending more to beef up the region's bailout fund.

Surveys ahead of the meeting showed pessimism among world CEOs and plunging levels of public trust in business and government leaders and concerns that fragility in the U.S. and European economies will bring the whole world's economy down.

HBT: Red Sox agree to deal with Cody Ross

9:14 PM: According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, Ross will make a $3 million base salary with the chance to earn more in bonuses based on plate appearances.

8:53 PM: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox and Cody Ross have agreed to a contract. No word on the terms yet, but Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald hears that it?s a one-year deal.

3:41 PM: Boston cleared $6 million off the books by trading Marco Scutaro to Colorado, presumably to pursue Roy Oswalt, but Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Red Sox are also having ?an ongoing dialogue? with free agent outfielder Cody Ross.

According to Crasnick the Mets are also in the mix for Ross, who at one point was said to be in talks with the A?s before they traded for corner outfielders Seth Smith and Josh Reddick.

Ross isn?t an ideal everyday player because his production versus right-handers is underwhelming, but he knocks around left-handers and is a solid defensive corner outfielder. And right now the Red Sox have Ryan Sweeney and Darnell McDonald penciled in as their right field platoon?and Carl Crawford is a health question mark?so even a mediocre starter like Ross would be a worthwhile pickup at the right price.

A new class of electron interactions in quantum systems

Monday, January 23, 2012

Physicists at the University of New South Wales have observed a new kind of interaction that can arise between electrons in a single-atom silicon transistor.

The findings, to be published this week in the journal Physical Review Letters, offer a more complete understanding of the mechanisms for electron transport in nanostructures at the atomic level.

"We have been able to study some of the most complicated transport mechanisms that can arise up to the single atom level," says lead author Dr Giuseppe C. Tettamanzi, from the School of Physics at UNSW.

The results contained in this study open the door for new quantum electronic schemes inwhich it is the orbital nature of the electrons ? and not their spin or their charge ? that plays a major role, he says.

The study, in collaboration with scientists from the ICMM in Madrid and the Kavli Institute in The Netherlands, describes how a single electron bound to a dopant atom in a silicon matrix can interact with many electrons throughout the transistor.

In these geometries, electron-electron interactions can be dominated by something called the Kondo effect. Conventionally, this arises from the spin degree of freedom, which represents an angular momentum intrinsic to each electron and is always in the up or in the down state.

However, researchers also observed that similar interactions could arise through the orbital degree of freedom of the electron. This describes the wave-like function of an electron and can be used to help determine an electrons' probable location around the atom's nucleus.

Importantly, by applying a strong magnetic field, the researchers were able to tune thiseffect to eliminate the spin-spin interactions while preserving the orbital-orbital interactions.

"By tuning the effect in two different symmetries of the fundamental state of the system?we have observed a symmetry crossover identical to those seen in high-energy physics," says Tettamanzi.

"In our case this crossover was observed simply by using a semiconductor device which is not too different from the transistor you use daily to send your emails."

Tettamanzi, who was recently awarded a prestigious ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award fellowship, will now investigate another transport mechanism that can arise in quantum dots and single atom transistors called "quantised charge pumping".

The idea here is to create a current flowing through a nanostructure without applying a voltage between the leads, but by applying varying potentials at one or more gates of the transistor, in an apparent violation of Ohm's law.

The Best Resources of Communications Degree Scholarships and ...

Find out the different institutions you can check out for communications degree scholarships and grants.

Are you looking for grants and scholarships for a communications degree?
Numerous jobs are vacant that welcome those with degrees of communication, and as such, grants and scholarships can be found everywhere.
To save money, you should know all about these financial aids offered for those taking up masters in communication.

The main reason why there are plenty of grants and scholarships for this field is that communications degree students can work on a variety of career fields.
Do you know what you can do with a communications degree?

People with advanced degrees in communication can pursue jobs in the fields of photography, graphic design, publishing, advertising, journalism and radio announcing, just to name a few.

With the wide range of possible jobs that this degree offers, you will realize that there is no shortage of financial assistance that can be obtained to help you with this degree.
So how do you earn these scholarships and grants?
You can earn them the same way that you would earn them in other programs.

You can earn a grant or scholarship through easy application.
However, not all schools require the traditional way of application.
Because this is a special field, the application process often requires a demonstration of your communication ability.

Similar to scholarships for English majors, most financial aid given to students will be based on your ability to speak your thoughts.
You may be requested to present your speaking ability or to write essays.
The application will be most likely a persuasive scholarship essay.

This test allows devoted communications students to stand out from others who, perhaps, are not cut for the field.
When you truly love the field of communications, then this form of application will let you present the culmination of your capabilities to shine.
After you have decided to pursue a communications degree scholarship, you should start considering the kind of skills you presently have to make sure your application stands out from the rest.

Many institutions offer financial aids.
You should visit the communications program website of the universities you are interested in.
There are also private scholarships available, which are a great source of funding as they usually offer them to students with specific majors.

The Electric Document System Foundation (EDSF) provides communications scholarships known as EDSF David Hoods Memorial Scholarship.
They offer 30 scholarships every year to students (fulltime) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Other popular private scholarships for communications degree students include the Betty Endicott/NTA-NCCB Student Scholarship and the James Lawrence Fly Scholarship.

The communications department at each college or university usually offers some form of financial aid that is specifically aimed at communication majors.
Currently, some schools have a good number of scholarship sources for their students.
Some of the most popular universities include the University of Miami and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Not everyone who decides to pursue some part of the communications field gets a communications degree.
In some cases, they go to other related degrees.
Use this factor to your advantage by applying to as many scholarships or grants that are exclusively aimed for those taking up degrees in communications.

GOP Candidates Debate Veteran Aid (ContributorNetwork)

American veterans have the daunting task of overcoming the physical and psychological traumas of war and integrating into a society with an ailing economy and unwelcoming job market. In fact, according to CNN's John King, a startling 22 percent of post-9/11 veterans aged 18 to 24 are currently unemployed.

The candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination were asked during the South Carolina GOP debate what they would do to facilitate veterans' transition back home.

Here is what they said, according to a debate transcript provided by the Chicago Sun-Times:

* Ron Paul: "We can create a healthy economic environment if we did the right things. But where the veterans really deserve help, both as a physician and as a congressman, is the people who've come back and aren't doing well health-wise. They need a lot more help. We have an epidemic now of suicide of our military coming back. So they need a lot of medical help, and I think they come up shortchanged. They came up shortchanged after Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War and even now. They don't get care from the Veterans Administration."

* Rick Santorum: "I grew up on VA grounds ? and I saw the impact of the Vietnam War on those veterans who came back. And they came back very damaged, not just with physical wounds but a lot of psychological wounds. And that's a very big part of the high unemployment rate that we're dealing with. And we need to be much, much more aggressive. We have a president of the United States who said he is going to cut veterans' benefits, cut our military, at a time when these folks are four, five, six, seven tours, coming back, in and out of jobs, sacrificing everything for this country, and the president of the United States can't cut one penny out of the social welfare system and he wants to cut a trillion dollars out of our military and hit our veterans. That's disgusting."

* Mitt Romney: "In our state we found a way to help our veterans by saying, look, if you're going to come back, particularly if you're in the National Guard, we'll pay for your education, college degree, both the fees and tuition -- we'd give you a full ride. And we also had a plan that said, if you come back and you've been out of work for a year or more, we're going to put a bonus on your back, which, if anyone hires you, that bonus goes to them to pay for your training. So we can encourage that to occur. But let's do it at the state level. Let's not have the federal government continue to extend its tentacles into everything that goes on in this country."

* Newt Gingrich: "The U.S. government did two dramatic things after World War II. They created a GI Bill which enabled literally millions of returning veterans to go to college for the very first time. ? So there was an enormous expansion of opportunity that enabled them to integrate into a new, emerging society. The second thing they did is, they dramatically cut taxes, and the economy took off and grew dramatically, and it absorbed the workforce."

EU finance chiefs to meet as Greek talks stall (AP)

PARIS ? European finance ministers will try on Monday to give new momentum to talks on a Greek debt relief deal that is crucial to avoid a default but remains elusive due to disagreements with the country's private creditors.

A deal would see Greece's debt load lightened by about euro100 billion ($129 billion) by having the creditors swap their Greek bonds for new ones of a longer maturity and potentially lower interest rate.

Germany, which is heavily involved in the negotiations because it pays for most of Greece's bailout, is leading a push for the new bonds to pay lower rates than the creditors are currently willing to accept.

The French and German finance ministers, Francois Baroin and Wolfgang Schaeuble, were holding talks in Paris before a meeting with their eurozone counterparts later in the day in Brussels.

Greek officials say negotiations on the private debt writedown are continuing over the phone, while no appointment has been set yet for new face-to-face talks this week.

Last week, representatives of the country's private creditors held three days of intensive talks with Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos on the bond swap, which is officially called-Private Sector Involvement, or PSI.

The negotiations had been due to resume Saturday, according to Greek officials. But Charles Dallara, managing director of the Institute of International Finance, which is handling the talks on behalf of banks and other private holders of Greek government bonds, left for a "long-standing engagement" in Paris on Saturday.

Dallara told The Associated Press over the weekend that he is "constantly talking by phone" with Greek officials and that the talks are "coming together."

The IIF's legal and financial advisers are still in Athens working on several "outstanding issues" with Greek officials and Dallara will return "as needed," a spokesman said.

On Sunday, Dallara was quoted by private Antenna TV as saying he had presented Athens with "the best possible" proposal on the debt writedown, and that "the main pieces are in the puzzle."

"I believe the elements now are in place for a historic voluntary PSI deal. It is a question now really of the broader reaction of the European official sector and of course the IMF to this proposal," he said.

Having the creditors accept the deal voluntarily would avoid the payout of insurance on the restructured bonds. The EU and IMF are trying hard to keep it a voluntary deal, but Dallara suggested their demands were pushing the limits of what the private creditors could consider voluntary.

"Our offer that was delivered to the Prime Minister is the maximum offer consistent with a voluntary PSI deal," he added. "We are in a crossroads. Either we choose a voluntary debt restructuring (or) the alternative is to choose the path of default."

Dallara said he was "quite hopeful" that common ground can be reached "in the very, very, very short term."

The writedown is a key part of Greece's second international bailout, agreed in October but not yet finalized. Since May 2010, the country has been surviving on a first euro110 billion ($142 billion) batch of rescue loans agreed on condition of deep spending cuts and sweeping public sector reforms.

Debt inspectors from the EU, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? collectively known as the troika ? will be meeting government officials in Athens this week on the course of the austerity program. Without approval from the troika, Greece will be cut off from its rescue loan lifeline, which would force it into a messy default on its debts in late March and ? most likely ? abandon the euro.

Gingrich cancels campaign event, poor attendance

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Newt Gingrich has cancelled a campaign appearance in South Carolina because of poor attendance.

The Republican presidential candidate was scheduled to speak to the Southern Republican Leadership on Friday. But a campaign spokesman told reporters that he would no longer be appearing due to poor attendance.

There were just a few dozen people in the audience at the College of Charleston's arena, where the event was taking place. The conference has suffered from low attendance all week but Gingrich rival Rick Santorum went ahead and addressed the group on Thursday.

Gingrich's spokesman said skipping the stop would give the former House speaker more time at his next scheduled event, a tour of a children's hospital.

(AP) ? NASA's retired space shuttle Atlantis is a step closer to completing its final journey.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex broke ground Wednesday for Atlantis' permanent home, a $100 million exhibit due to open in summer 2013. Schoolchildren waved red, white and blue Atlantis flags ? 33 flags representing each of Atlantis' space missions ? as state and local dignitaries joined former shuttle staff at the construction site.

The astronaut who commanded Atlantis' final spaceflight, Christopher Ferguson, told the more than 100 guests that Atlantis will serve as "a reminder of the limitless potential" of Americans and also inspire children, some of whom will become future space travelers.

Ferguson, who now works for Boeing on new space vehicles, made note of the effort to preserve the past while working toward the future: "I'd like you all to stay tuned as we turn to the next chapter of the journey that will never end."

Shuttle Discovery will actually be the first to ship out to museums. In April, it will head to the National Air and Space Museum's display hangar outside Washington. Shuttle Endeavour will travel to the California Science Center in Los Angeles in the second half of the year.

NASA's 30-year shuttle program ended last July with the voyage of Atlantis. Since then, workers have been getting them ready for display by draining hazardous fuel, disconnecting or removing some systems and replacing the main engines with replicas.

Delaware North Parks & Resorts, which runs the Kennedy visitor complex for NASA, used an industrial-size digger to unveil a huge picture of the planned exhibit hall. The six-story structure will feature two curved "wings" in orange and gold colors, representing the intense heat of re-entry.

Atlantis will be displayed as if flying in orbit, with the cargo bay doors open and the robot arm extended.

ASUS MeMic hits the FCC, reminds us of its existence

Remember the ASUS MeMic? It's okay if you don't -- after all, it's been nearly a year since we first saw the thing. But the transparent-screened handset that takes calls for the Eee Pad MeMO appears to have reared its little head over on the FCC's site. No word on whether this is the same MeMic we saw so many moons ago or an updated version, though the above image does look a fair amount like the rear of the device we saw back in February. There's also no word on what such a governmental visit could mean so far as a stateside release date, though the device did reportedly show up at CES last week.

Citigroup profit falls 11 percent, misses Street view (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Citigroup Inc's fourth-quarter profit fell 11 percent and missed Wall Street estimates as the European debt crisis battered capital markets, hurting trading revenue and discouraging clients from doing deals.

Citi on Tuesday said the crisis and fears about its impact on other markets and the global economy led to a broad move by clients away from risk and a decline in market volumes around the world. Fixed income, equity markets and investment banking revenues all declined in the quarter.

"The operating environment continues to be extraordinarily challenging in a number of businesses, none more so than securities and banking," Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach said on a conference call with analysts.

Citi's results show how investment banking units are dragging down profits for large Wall Street firms, and portend a tough fourth quarter for others such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Morgan Stanley, which report their results later this week.

In contrast, banks that focus more on business and consumer lending are doing better as the U.S. economy shows signs of recovery. Wells Fargo & Co beat analysts' earnings estimates on Tuesday, helped by improving credit quality and loan growth.

This trend was also reflected last week in the results of JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Money manager Jeffrey Sica, president of SICA Wealth Management, an independent wealth manager based in Morristown, New Jersey, which has bet against a basket of bank stocks, said Citi's earnings miss was "horrendous" in light of how much estimates had come down.

"It's a very negative sign for banks in general," said Sica.

Citigroup shares fell 6 percent in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, lagging the KBW banks index, which was down 0.2 percent.

"Clearly, the macro environment has impacted the capital markets and we will continue to right-size our businesses to match the environment," Citigroup Chief Executive Vikram Pandit said in a statement.

Pandit said the bank was cutting about 5,000 jobs and had taken a $400 million charge in the fourth quarter for severance payments. The bank, which has about 266,000 employees, said in December that it would cut 4,500 jobs and take that charge.

The world's major banks have announced more than 133,000 layoffs since mid-2011 as euro zone woes take their toll on trading income and investment banking.

Citi, the third-largest U.S. bank by assets, reported net income of $1.16 billion, or 38 cents per share, down from $1.31 billion, or 43 cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts, on average, expected a profit of 49 cents a share, according to surveys by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Estimates were high as 76 cents a share two weeks ago.

"Citi's number to come in like this, still missing even though estimates were already cut, that's a cause of great concern," said Todd Schoenberger, managing director at LandColt Trading in Wilmington, Delaware.

Citi said securities and banking revenue fell 29 percent from a year earlier, excluding the accounting impact of changes in the value of the bank's debt.

The profit drop came despite a lower provision for bad loans: down 41 percent to $2.9 billion.

Citi Holdings, which holds assets the bank plans to sell, posted a 30 percent decline in revenue to $2.8 billion as it continued to shed assets.

Citi Holdings had $269 billion in assets at the end of the fourth quarter, down about $90 billion from a year earlier.

Citigroup's operating expenses increased 4 percent to $12.9 billion in the fourth quarter. Pandit said the bank expects to reduce expenses by between $2.5 billion and $3 billion in 2012 from the $50.7 billion it posted for all of 2011.
