Iolo System Mechanic 11

If your PC isn't blazing along at the same speed as it did when you first lifted it from its box, you'd do well to invest in Iolo System Mechanic 11 . The multi-faceted utility suite turns back the clock on worn machines by repairing the registry, defragging the hard drive, and eliminating files that stymie snappy performance. Iolo System Mechanic 11 serves up a host of new features not present in previous builds we've reviewed, including AcceleWrite, which optimizes file organization by minimizing random data writing to HDDs and SSDs, and Windows 8 compatibility. All in all, Iolo System Mechanic remains one of the best PC tune-up utilities around, and the PCMag.com Editors' Choice among paid tuneup apps, as it digs deep, cleans up PCs well, and offers informative, easy-to-understand help about the problems that plague computers.

Set Up and Interface
Iolo System Mechanic 11 is compatible with all PCs running Windows XP and higher, including Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8. Unlike most PC tune-up utilities, such as PC Tools Performance Toolkit , which limit you to three licenses, Iolo System Mechanic 11 lets you install the software on any number of computers provided that it's not for business purposes. This is a welcome feature in the age of the multi-PC household.

The interface looks very similar to that of Iolo System Mechanic 10 with its familiar red-white-and-blue color scheme. Like the previous version of System Mechanic, this version has several options in the left pane (Dashboard, ActiveCare, Internet Security, Toolbox, Reports) that have their own individual tool sub-categories that let you run specific apps.

Iolo System Mechanic 11 also installs a useful widget on the desktop that gives you at-a-glance PC health and security readings. From this widget, you can run a system scan to determine your computer's health, or launch any number of Iolo System Mechanic 11's features to begin the clean up process.

The Clean Up Process
The Overview screen opens by default when the program is launched, and it's where the "Analyze Now" button lives. Clicking the arrow next to it opened drop-down box that presented two choices: "Perform Quick Analysis" and "Perform Deep Analysis." The former is a one- to two-minute scan that looks for the most common PC problems; the latter is a five- to seven-minute scan that checks for all problems. Considering the heavy use that our test laptop had received, I went with the second option. Approximately six minutes later it finished the scan and uncovered numerous problems on my testbed.

Beneath the reading appeared a highlighted message: "Boost speed and stability by removing redundant programs with CRUDD Remover." CRUDD is Iolo's acronym for Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers?fancy talk for duplicate programs that clog your system. The idea behind CRUDD Remover is to eliminate those extra programs as each application install theoretically slows your PC's performance a bit. After running CRUDD Remover, 9 problems were detected on the PC, which were explained in simple detail on the "Problems" screen.

What I found truly cool was that Iolo System Mechanic 11 didn't just serve up a number?it provided blurbs that explained why these problems negatively impact performance. I checked off all nine problems, clicked the "Repair All" button, and performed the required reboot. Performing another deep scan revealed that the problems were addressed.

I ran Iolo's Program Accelerator, which smartly re-aligns all of a program's dependent files on the hard drive. It's touted as being better than disk defragmenters, which can blindly compact and separate files even more. Program Accelerator took approximately 15 minutes to work its magic, and, when it was done, I discovered that it had re-aligned over 20,000 files and eliminated nearly 100 file fragments. Four further files were defragmented after a restart. There are also a ton of other tools backed into the suite such as AcceleWrite (a new real-time feature that helps organize the way data is written to the PC's HDD or SSD) , and IntelliStatus (which displays RAM and hard drive information and serves up cleaning tools).

Performance Improvements
I tested Iolo System Mechanic 11's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing two tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool and measuring boot times?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before Iolo scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,914 Geekbench score, and booted in 50.2 seconds.

After I used Iolo System Mechanic 11, I saw much-improved system performance: The GeekBench score rose to 6,452, and the boot time decreased to just 37.1 seconds. Both scores represent the best post-cleanup measurements. Check out the chart below to see how Iolo System Mechanic 11 fared against the competition.

After running the tests, I also used the computer extensively to get a sense of how the app changes the machine's responsiveness.? Iolo System Mechanic 11 delivered a noticeable performance improvement?of special note, iTunes and Steam opened faster in the fresh environment.

Should You Use Iolo System Mechanic 11?
The answer is a resounding yes. Iolo System Mechanic 11 has simple interface, easy-to-understand problem definitions, and a deep array of performance-enhancing tools that produce excellent all-around scores. Plus, unlike suites such as PC Tools Tuneup Utilities, one subscription can be installed on any number of computers. Iolo System Mechanic remains the Editors' Choice among paid tune up utilities.

Health fund in Ohio set up in Armstrong's memory

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Former astronauts, political and business leaders, and family and friends have gathered in suburban Cincinnati to mourn and celebrate the life of Neil Armstrong.

The service at a private club was closed, but a program stated that it included a Navy ceremonial guard, and comments by Armstrong's two sons and Sen. Rob Portman.

A flyover by Navy fighter planes was planned at the end of the service, in tribute to Armstrong's Navy pilot service that included combat missions in Korea.

The first man to walk on the moon died last Saturday at age 82. A national memorial service in Washington is expected within two weeks.

No guest list was released but among some 10 former astronauts was space pioneer John Glenn and Armstrong's fellow Apollo astronauts, including James Lovell, Eugene Cernan and William Anders.

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with 'Intelligent Peak LED' backlighting

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with 'Intelligent Peak LED' backlighting

While Sony's current lineup of HDTVs has so far topped out with the HX929/920 series that's been kicking around since 2011, in Japan it has just unveiled a new top of the line model: the HX950. Often rumored in the last few months, it's available in 65- or 55-inch varieties and features Sony's now-trademark monolithic style as well as "Intelligent Peak LED" backlighting. Although Sony's brand name for the tech doesn't exactly reveal how it works, information leaks have suggested it is full array LED backlighting and not edge based, although we don't know how many zones (individually controlled light sources) are in play. What we do know, however is that it claims to outperform the LED backlighting in the old 929 quite handily, although we'll let our eyes be the judge of that.

It also includes MotionFlow XR960 (800 in the US) motion processing tech that can create 240fps from 60 frames and a glass panel mounted to the LCD itself with a special type of resin designed specifically to reduce glare. Finally, there's also the usual add-ins like 3D and Sony Entertainment Network streaming video. We haven't seen any European or US information for this model yet, although with IFA 2012 under way and CEDIA coming up that may change quickly. Currently pricing in Japan for the 65-inch is expected to be around 650,000 yen or $8,269 when it ships November 10th, but we should mention actual US prices are typically much lower than a direct conversion. Unofficially, one retailer is already listing the 55- and 65-inch models for sale in the US for $3,499 and $5,499, respectively, although we'd take that with a grain of salt until we know for sure.

Isaac packs hazards despite weakening winds

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Isaac is spinning off life-threatening severe weather even as it weakens slowly on a northward trek over Louisiana.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Isaac's wind strength was slowly ebbing Thursday. But the storm was still generating hazards from inland flooding, storm surge and potential tornadoes across the central Gulf Coast.

The hurricane center said tropical storm-force winds over 39 mph were being felt up to 175 miles from Isaac's center, mainly to its east and south.

Isaac's center bypassed New Orleans and its newly fortified levees as a hurricane Wednesday but flooded areas to the city's north and south, where people had to be evacuated or rescued.

Isaac had top sustained winds of 45 mph early Thursday as its center moved over southern Louisiana.

Falcon review - a sharp, customizable Twitter home screen widget

Falcon is a really great homescreen widget for Twitter. It follows closely in line with the Android design guidelines while still having its own distinct style.  The widget is fully resizable and offers a handful of solid color choices and layouts. It still carries a beta tag, so Falcon is totally free, but still a work-in-progress.

The full complement of standard functions are available, including replying, retweeting (both native and quoted), favoriting, and sharing tweets via the system-wide menu. Conversations are threaded, though the tweets within the thread don’t have in-line reply/retweet/favorite controls, which is occasionally an issue.

Japan, N. Korea in first face-to-face talks since 2008

Japan and North Korea met on Wednesday in Beijing for their first face-to-face talks in four years in an attempt to lay the groundwork to overcome decades of mutual distrust.

Ties between the two countries have long been strained, though they periodically try to resume dialogue with the ultimate -- and so far elusive -- goal of establishing formal diplomatic relations.

The talks come as governments and analysts seek clues about the emerging foreign policy of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, who took over the communist state after his father Kim Jong-Il died in December.

An official with the Japanese embassy in Beijing who asked not to be named confirmed that the discussions, which Tokyo has said are preparatory and which involve two relatively junior diplomats, had begun.

The discussions were expected to last one day but might stretch into Thursday.

The issues that have long bedevilled Japan-North Korea relations, however, remain largely the same as before so it is unclear how much, if any, progress can be made in the encounter.

Tokyo continues to want further answers regarding the fate of citizens abducted by North Korean agents, amid suspicions in Japan that Pyongyang has failed to provide all the information it has.

Secretive North Korea admitted in 2002 its agents kidnapped Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s to help train spies by teaching Japanese language and culture, and later allowed five of them and their families to return home.

It said another eight died, though many in Japan hold out hope they remain alive. There are also suspicions that Pyongyang's agents abducted more Japanese than was admitted.

Japan says North Korea agreed to reopen investigations into the fate of abducted Japanese when the two sides last met in 2008.

From a security standpoint, Japan also remains wary of North Korea's past ballistic missile tests over its territory or aimed at its airspace as well as underground nuclear experiments in 2006 and 2009 and threats of more.

North Korea, meanwhile, craves trade with Japan yet blasts its military alliance with the United States, colonisation of the Korean peninsula in the first half of the 20th century and treatment of ethnic Koreans in Japan.

The Korean Central News Agency, North Korea's media mouthpiece, in a commentary Tuesday criticised Japan for its past colonialism.

"Japan not only grabbed the territory, culture and natural resources of the Korean nation but deprived Koreans of even their names," it said.

"These atrocities were recorded as the most barbarous and disgraceful aggression in human history."

Heavily militarised and largely impoverished North Korea, prone to damage from natural disasters such as flooding due to poor infrastructure and deforestation, struggles to feed its people.

Jin Matsubara, Japan's state minister for the abduction issue, said last week that progress could yield big dividends in humanitarian aid.

Outsource office work, increase productivity!

Your time is your money.

If you?re like many businesses these days, you?re probably up to your eyeballs in work with a small staff. Your time is limited and you don?t have the time or resources to waste on tasks that can be outsourced.

That?s where I come in.

Virtual assistants are a godsend to business owners these days. We can work around the clock remotely on office tasks that you?d otherwise have to have someone in person to tackle. This increases your business productivity tenfold, which frees you up to handle more important tasks.

Time is Money - ProductivityAre you feeling a bit overwhelmed with the work piling up on your desk? It?s no problem at all for me, because I?ve been doing this full time online since 1998 and can take away some of your burden. Not only will I be able to take away stress, we?d be working together in an independent contractor capacity, so there?s no need to worry yourself with full-time salary, benefits, health insurance or costly training sessions.

Virtual office assistants are often more skilled than typical assistants also. For instance, many are well-versed in WordPress design, SEO practices, desktop publishing, graphics and more and can do it faster and more efficiently. This means you have a greater variety of work that can be passed along.

As time goes on, we?re becoming an increasingly digital society. People are conducting more business than ever online and with cell phone and tablet apps. When?s the last time you went to the bank? I?ll bet that you conducted business via ATM or online rather than spending time speaking with a teller and filling out forms. The internet has afforded us the convenience of streamlining our typical life practices to free up time for other activities.

Hiring a virtual assistant is no different. You?re hiring an independent contractor that likely earns a full-time living from home and whom you?ll likely never meet in person! While this is the case, this person completes just as much work, if not more than a traditional office assistant would.

Business productivity is not something that should be compromised. Every minute wasted is a potential dollar squandered. In order to keep up with the competition and your own standards, increasing productivity is a must. The world and business climate are rapidly changing, so the idea of hiring a virtual assistant will likely become the norm sooner than later. Outsourcing projects/tasks?has always been a business practice, this is just the new format.

Think of a virtual assistant as a value-added asset. Contact Office To-Go today so you can focus on your clients, your strengths and building your business.

SEATTLE: Forget that his face adorns lunchboxes. Darth Vader is supposed to be menacing. But when Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft?s deputy counsel of intellectual property and licensing, dressed up as the ominous Star Wars Sith Lord one Halloween? Not so much. ?I?ve never seen a happier Darth Vader,? said Gutierrez?s boss, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith. In some ways that image captures perceptions of Microsoft in the patent battles now raging among tech companies ? and Gutierrez?s role in them.

Microsoft has signed a number of licensing agreements with ? or filed lawsuits against ? companies it says infringe on its patents, most notably manufacturers of devices using Google?s Android operating system. To some, Microsoft is a menace that wields its power to extract sizable royalty payments on Android devices even as its own Windows mobile devices flounder. In that view, Microsoft uses patents as a cash cow rather than a way to protect inventions. To others, Microsoft leads the way in how intellectual-property disputes should be settled, with a preference for licensing over litigation and an eye toward fair settlements ? while protecting its vast investment in research and development over the years. Gutierrez, too, embodies those dual perceptions.

In his role heading the company?s patent, trademark and copyright work, the 47-year-old attorney is in a position to stare down some of the largest technology companies in the world. The work he and his team produce makes headlines, from broad agreements with Samsung to battles with Motorola in courtrooms worldwide. The consequences can be sweeping, from billion-dollar deals to import bans on products. But within Microsoft, Gutierrez is known as much for his good humor as for his legal acumen.

The patent arena is ?filled with conflict, disagreements and complicated technologies. A little humor goes a long way,? said David Kaefer, general manager of intellectual-property licensing, who works for Gutierrez.
The kind of role Gutierrez plays is becoming increasingly visible as high-profile tech companies wage patent battles in courts worldwide over products used daily by millions of people. At Microsoft, Gutierrez leads the team devising strategies on which patents to acquire, what to do with the ones it has, and how to protect its new technologies. He also leads some of the negotiations for licensing deals himself ? including a major 2011 deal with Samsung.

Gutierrez says he thrives on tense negotiations, seeing it as a challenge to break through with humor, empathy and attempts ?to think of ways in which the interests of both companies can be aligned.? ?He?s just creative in finding ways to get the deals done,? said Terry Myerson, head of Microsoft?s Windows Phone division. ?Licensing intellectual property ? doing it in a reasonable but win-win manner -requires incredible creativity and understanding of tech and global intellectual property.? When the Kinect ? Microsoft?s motion- and voice-sensing technology ? was being developed, Gutierrez immediately saw the opportunities for the company, recalled Rich Wallis, deputy general counsel of Microsoft?s interactive entertainment division.

?I remember being in meetings with him where he was so excited about the technology,? Wallis said. ?It was visibly palpable. He?s a high-energy person. His voice gets a little quicker. His eyes light up. The hands start moving.? Gutierrez showed such gusto and ambition from early on. Born and raised in Maracaibo, Venezuela, the son of an attorney father and a homemaker mother, Gutierrez started law school at 16, graduated by 21, and became a partner at a law firm in Venezuela by 28.

He spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University, earning a master?s of law degree, then came to the U.S., working at an investment bank before joining a law firm in Miami and earned his doctor of laws degree from the University of Miami at the same time. ?We quickly realized we had a major talent here,? said Terrence Connor, former managing partner of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, the law firm where Gutierrez worked in Miami. Gutierrez came to work in Microsoft?s Fort Lauderdale, Fla., office in 1998 after one of his law-journal articles ? on the liabilities of manufacturers for the Y2K bug -caught someone?s eye at Microsoft. He first met Smith, his current boss, during one of Smith?s periodic visits to the company?s regional offices.

Over his two-day visit, Smith focused on anti-piracy issues, leaving little time to talk about commercial concerns ? Gutierrez?s area. ?I was so, so mad,? Gutierrez recalls. ?We had literally two hours to talk and I packed a day of content into those two hours. It was possibly a passive-aggressive thing: ?See what you?ve missed by not focusing on this.? ? Smith recalls that Gutierrez ?just jumped off the page. He easily exceeded my expectations.?

A year and a half later, Smith asked Gutierrez to move to Redmond, where he dealt with European Union and US Department of Justice antitrust investigations of Microsoft. After that, he spent four years in Brussels heading up Microsoft?s legal department for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In 2006, Gutierrez took over as head of Microsoft?s worldwide intellectual-property group. At the time, the company had ?the desire to go out and do some actual deals and (get) paid for our patents,? Gutierrez said. ?I saw it as my mission to conceive of a licensing program as a way of getting deals done.? These days, Gutierrez lives in Clyde Hill, Wash., with his family ? wife Morella Troconis, a mechanical engineer with an MBA who is currently a homemaker, and three children ages 8 to 18.

All three play soccer, which delights Gutierrez, a big fan. Gutierrez has also turned more attention recently to diversity issues, serving as recently elected president of the Northwest region of the Hispanic National Bar Association and, as part of his position at Microsoft, creating a network for women working in intellectual property. To date, Microsoft has reached more than a thousand agreements in which companies either pay Microsoft royalties or have cross-licensing agreements in which each company uses the other?s patented technologies. One company notably absent from that list: Motorola, now owned by Google. Representatives of Motorola and Google declined to comment for this report. But Google has contended elsewhere that Microsoft, having failed to succeed in the smartphone market, is turning to legal wrangling over patents to ?extort profit from others? achievements and hinder the pace of innovation.?

Microsoft has also taken flak in years past after pursuing companies using the open-source Linux operating system, which includes technologies Microsoft said infringes on its patents. Critics slammed the software giant, seeing it as a moral issue of Microsoft trying to stifle open-source development. Gutierrez, naturally, did not see it that way. ?I grappled with (that) perception,? he said. ?I didn?t think there was an actual issue at all. The companies taking advantage of us were commercial companies making money.? That same outlook applies to the company?s patent battles with manufacturers using Android. ?You can?t infringe on another company?s IP and give that away,? Gutierrez said. ?The solution is licensing.?

Currently, more than 70 percent of all US Android devices are licensed under Microsoft?s program. Gutierrez, a history buff, contends what?s happening now with patent battles in the mobile business is what happens every time there?s been a technological disruption: with the sewing machine, the telegraph and the telephone, for instance. ?What happened eventually was that litigation ran its course. Licensing programs took place or, eventually, technology evolved,? he said. Joff Wild, editor of Intellectual Asset Management Magazine, says that in terms of intellectual property, ?I think Microsoft is probably playing the smartphone wars far more intelligently than any other company.? All tech companies try to manage their intellectual property strategically, Wild said. ?I like the Microsoft strategy best because it?s not driven by emotion; it?s driven by business object.? ? MCT

France ready to recognise Syria opposition government

French President Francois Hollande stepped up pressure on Syria Monday, saying France would recognise a provisional government and warning of a foreign intervention if the regime uses chemical weapons.

In a speech to French diplomats, Hollande called for an "intensification of efforts for the political transition to take place quickly" and urged the Syrian opposition to form a "provisional, inclusive and representative" government.

"France will recognise the provisional government of the new Syria as soon as it is formed," he said.

Washington, however, reacted that before setting up a government the Syrian opposition first needed to coordinate with citizens inside and outside the country and set a democratic path.

"So that's the first order of business -- for them to all agree on what a transition ought to look like. Obviously, it's a matter for them to decide if and when they may be prepared to start naming folks," said US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

Hollande was on the same page with the United States and Britain when he warned the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that using chemical weapons would be a legitimate reason for a foreign intervention.

"We with our allies remain very watchful to prevent the use of chemical weapons by the regime, which would be for the international community a legitimate cause for direct intervention," Hollande said.

Hollande also confirmed France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of buffer zones within Syria to receive people displaced by the conflict and prevent them flooding over the borders into neighbouring states.

Turkey in particular has been pushing for such a move, which would require military back-up to ensure the security of the refugees.

"We are working ... (on) the initiative of buffer zones proposed by Turkey," Hollande said, adding that "we are doing so in coordination with our closest partners."

Hollande said the opposition of Russia and China to action against the Syrian regime was weakening the United Nations.

"I am saying to Russia and to China that their attitude in the Syria crisis is weakening our capacity to fulfill the mandate given us by the United Nations charter," he said.

"Our country only participates in operations to keep the peace or protect civilians by virtue of a mandate and therefore a resolution of the United Nations Security Council," Hollande said.

"For this the (Security Council) members must take their responsibility to allow it to take decisions," he said.

Hollande said resolving the Syria crisis was crucial not only for the country itself but for the region as a whole.

"I know the difficulty of the task, I understand the risks, but the stakes go beyond Syria. This concerns the security of all the Middle East and in particular the independence and stability of Lebanon," he said.

Hollande also touched on Iran in the speech outlining his foreign policy priorities, saying it was unacceptable for Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons and warning of new sanctions.

"It would be unacceptable for Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon and this country must meet its international obligations," Hollande said.

"As long as Iran does not answer all questions (on its nuclear programme) and does not conform to international law, it is France's responsibility to further increase sanctions against the Iranian regime."

Saudi plan to boost women's employment? Create a women-friendly city.

The Saudi government announced the formation of a women-friendly city in Hofuf, scheduled to open next year. The idea is to increase work opportunities ? without defying religious custom.

By Lisa De Bode,?Correspondent / August 15, 2012

A version of this story published earlier today mistakenly reported that only women would work in the city. A Saudi government report said that it will create job opportunities for both men and women in the area. We apologize for the error.

Women in the Westernized world largely take for granted being able to work and mingle freely with colleagues without fear of repercussions. That's not the case with women in Saudi Arabia: Among those who are allowed to work, most must operate in limited, segregated spaces.

But now the Saudis are addressing that, albeit in an unconventional way. A women-friendly industrial city with built-in segregated work spaces in factories and proximity to residential neighborhoods in Hofuf should create more job opportunities ? but in accordance with religious customs. The Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) says it is slated to open next year.

"I'm sure that women can demonstrate their efficiency in many aspects and clarify the industries that best suits their interests, their nature, and their ability," Modon?s deputy director-general, Saleh Al Rasheed, told the Saudi daily al-Eqtisadiah, according to The Daily Mail.

The motives for the city's development are several. Women can help boost Saudization ? an ailing government program aimed at increasing the proportion of Saudi nationals in a labor market heavily reliant on foreign workers. Interest in diversifying away from oil also plays a role: about 5,000 jobs in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food-processing industries would be created. And a growing cohort of female graduates who were sent abroad on a government scholarship aren't content with sitting at home anymore.

The Kingdom boasts one of the lowest national female labor participation rates of the region ? at only 15 percent of its active workforce, it's outpaced by Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. About one quarter of those are unemployed, but highly qualified, according to a report issued by consultancy group Booz & Co.

But the number of women entering the workforce, eager to become financially independent from their families, has nearly tripled over the past 10 years. Saudi female business women are generally better educated than male workers ? only 1 percent of business women have no formal education, in contrast to 14.5 percent of the Saudi workforce according to the Monitor Group and the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce & Industry ? and are often regarded as more productive.

But not every woman is ready to give up on her religious beliefs and loosen the strict standards she was raised with. The new women-friendly city will allow such women to balance their religious beliefs and desire to work.

Modon said in a statement that the city would be "characterized by allocating sections equipped for women workers... consistent with the privacy of women according to Islamic guidelines and regulations.?

Trying to break with tradition at a media company

Mashail Almadi, a former human resources executive at Rotana, a media company owned by Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Al Saud, recounts the difficulties she had when trying to hire female employees. In defiance of the Kingdom?s strict dress code, the company does not allow women to wear their abayas at the office, where men and women work alongside one another. ?

?When I mentioned these requirements, some female candidates would just hang up or start yelling at me over the phone,? Ms. Almadi says. Many aren?t ready for such a change. "The prospect of working in a mixed work environment is a scary one for many Saudi women.?

She experienced some of that social resistance first-hand. At a previous job, she wore the niqab, or face-covering veil. At Rotana, this wasn?t necessary anymore. ?But my father didn?t want everyone to know I was working here,? she says, ?to protect the family?s reputation.?

Recent efforts in retail to allow women to sell lingerie and cosmetics are increasing employment, but fall short of addressing the many regulatory challenges female businesswomen face.

Indirect access to government services and capital, the requirement to appoint a male manager, and the absence of proper licenses for female business activities such as beauty salons and women?s fitness centers ? which can only be opened if affiliated with a medical establishment ? persist. Less than half of all female entrepreneurs register their businesses themselves.

Saudi businesswomen rate their experience as most challenging in terms of gender compared to their peers in the Middle East/North Africa region, but are also among the most optimistic about their prospects for growth, according to a survey. The women-friendly city, it is hoped, will contribute to this trend.

(AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."

Home Based Business Success ? Why Self Confidence Is Definitely ...

A fruitful home business can change anyone?s life and financial future for the greater. Nevertheless, not everyone in the industry accomplishes home business success. There are lots of people who are doing well and are earning great earnings, but there are more people who are failing. How come this?Well, feel it or not, it has a lot to do with your self-confidence. Having self confidence is not only important to build a successful home based business, nonetheless it is important to possess in whatever you do. 99% of everybody who has reached home business accomplishment has an attitude and they have confidence in themselves. This is what sets the successful people apart for the failures. When somebody is not successful in a based business, it?s simple to just blame the business opportunity. But, if you have a based business opportunity that other folks are having success with and you are not, chances are your insufficient confidence and belief is what?s keeping you back.No one does this purposely, but one somebody who originates from a J.O.B. mentality, it?s hard to see themselves as the manager. In a based business, you are the manager and you are in control. When you?re used to becoming an worker and not in get a handle on of something, seeing yourself as a successful person who?s the supervisor can be difficult.Start trusting in yourself and start seeing yourself as a successful person. When you?ve this kind of confidence and this attitude, you can become unstoppable in this industry.Home business success is achieved when you see yourself as a fruitful person and have the confidence and belief that you can do anything. If you are not comfortable in yourself and you don?t feel that you could create a successful home business, you never can.

Ann Romney?s convention speech moved to Tuesday

The Romneys in Iowa (Joe Raedle/Getty Images)Organizers of the Republican National Convention are moving Ann Romney's speech to Tuesday night after the three major television networks opted against airing convention coverage on Monday.

According to GOP officials, Romney, the wife of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, will swap speaking slots with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who had been set to speak on Tuesday, so that her remarks will air in prime time.

Earlier Friday, Russ Schriefer, a senior adviser to the Romney campaign, told reporters convention organizers were still hopeful the networks might change their minds and air Ann Romney's speech. But by late Friday, they gave in and pushed Romney's speech back a day to give her remarks better coverage.

On Friday afternoon, rumors swirled that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who is scheduled to introduce Mitt Romney on Thursday, might have to give up his speaking slot?prompting panic among some Republicans who remain disappointed that he was not picked to be Romney's running mate.

Matt Rhoades, Romney's campaign manager, said in a statement to reporters that Rubio had been "incredibly gracious to offer his speaking slot" to Romney's wife, but the campaign still wanted him to speak ahead of Romney on Thursday.

"Sen. Rubio represents the future of the Republican Party, and we can think of no better person to introduce Gov. Romney on this important night," Rhoades said.

Police: Woman says man called from Ark. squad car

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? The girlfriend of a man who was fatally shot in the back of an Arkansas patrol car told an investigator that he called her from the car and said he had a gun with him, police said Wednesday.

Jonesboro police offered those and other new details in a four-page statement about the investigation into the July 28 death of 21-year-old Chavis Carter. The death was ruled a suicide in an autopsy report released earlier this week.

Carter's girlfriend also told the investigator that Carter said he loved her and that he was scared, according to the police statement, which did not identify the woman. Phone records showed Carter made two calls, at least one of which was from the back of the patrol car, police said.

Benjamin Irwin, a Memphis, Tenn., lawyer representing Carter's family, said Wednesday that he was reviewing the latest information from police.

"I think the critical points still remain that this young man was in police custody," he said. "He lost his life at a time when they had a responsibility and duty to protect him."

Police have been facing criticism since they said officers searched Carter twice but didn't find a gun before he was fatally shot in a patrol car. Race is also an issue in the case because Carter was black and police have said the two officers who stopped the truck he was in are white.

The police statement said there appears to be no doubt that an officer missed the gun when he initially patted Carter down.

"It is presumed that Carter secreted the gun in the rear of the car after the pat-down but before the cuffing and second search," the statement said.

The statement said it was meant to be "a brief preliminary investigative summary" and noted that the investigation into Carter's death isn't complete. However, the statement said evidence and witness statements support the medical examiner's conclusion that Carter killed himself.

Spokesman Sgt. Lyle Waterworth didn't respond to an email or phone message seeking further comment.

Police also said they tracked down a man from a video on Carter's phone who said he sent Carter a text message asking him to bring him a gun shortly before his run-in with the officers. That man also said Carter was involved with a drug deal involving 4 ounces of marijuana, police said.

Police have said officers found marijuana on Carter when they searched him. The autopsy report also said he tested positive for meth and other drugs.

The police statement also said blood spatter on Carter's right hand showed his hand was close to the contact wound on his right temple. Blood was also on a rear passenger door of the patrol car, police said.

Officers and bystanders said the patrol car doors and windows were closed and that the officers weren't near the car until Carter was found, police said.

"This virtually eliminates any possibility that the fatal wound was caused by any weapon other than the one recovered in the rear of the vehicle and that its discharge was caused by Carter," police said in the statement.

The Arkansas state crime lab confirmed Wednesday that it did not perform gunshot residue testing on Carter, saying it doesn't do that kind of analysis on victims of homicides or suicides.

The confirmation came after Jonesboro Police Chief Michael Yates told The Associated Press that the department had requested the testing but that it wasn't done because of the agency's policy.

The lab's chief criminalist, Lisa Channell, said the testing can indicate whether a person was in an environment with gunshot residue, but "it cannot tell you whether the person pulled the trigger or not."

The crime lab's policy is not new. A 2001 memo sent to law enforcement officers said being in close proximity to a gun when it's fired can lead to positive gunshot residue test results and that negative gunshot residue results don't mean someone didn't fire a gun.

Still, Irwin questioned why the test wasn't conducted.

"To me, that's horrible," he said.

Police previously released video recorded from dashboard cameras the night of the shooting, but the footage didn't appear to show when officers found Carter slumped over and bleeding in the backseat of a patrol car as described in a police report.

Police said there were problems with the audio and video that explain the absence of a gunshot or noise on the recordings.

Irwin, Carter's family's lawyer, didn't buy that explanation.

"These things are crystal clear from a reception standpoint and from a functioning standpoint," he said. "And then they just malfunction for three minutes when this young man lost his life? I am just not ready to accept that as the answer."

The police statement came out less than an hour before Carter's mom marched with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other supporters in Jonesboro.

"We hope that people concerned about justice, white and black, would find some common ground as we pursue this case of justice," Jackson told reporters in Memphis, Tenn., hours before the Jonesboro march. "We simply want justice and fairness in the land. ... We are convinced the explanations given so far are not credible ones."
