FM may defer rollout of GAAR to FY15 | Firstpost

The Parthasarathi Shome committee today presented its final report on the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR), the controversial tax provisions aiming to target tax evaders, to Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

The Parthasarathi Shome committee today presented its final report on the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR),to Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

However, finance ministry sources told CNBC-TV18?that the government may defer the introduction of GAAR by another year to financial year 2015 in order to? provide a fillip to the investment sentiment in the country.

Through this year?s Finance Act, the government had proposed to introduce the anti-avoidance rules from April 2013. A deferment would need amendment to the Income Tax Act.

The panel has also suggested that? interest and penalty be waived if tax has been applied retrospectively. While presenting the draft report,? Shome? had advised that anti-tax avoidance measures such as GAAR should be used sparingly and not to raise revenue for the government.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram is? likely to announce? the final? decision on GAAR? on Thursday.

Major concerns for US tax breaks for donating to charity - Blog ...

It seems that Obama and Romney are tripping over each other to downsize tax incentives for donations to charities in the US.? Here is an interesting article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy entitled ?Nonprofit Leaders Urge Obama and Romney to Protect Tax Break?.? If Obama caps donation incentives at 28% or Romney effectively eliminates incentives for large gifts by capping deductions then it will be interesting to see how this impacts Canada.? Currently the incentives for giving in Canada are far superior to the US.? For example, a wealthy person in Ontario may save 48-65% on their donation (depending on whether it is cash or appreciated marketable securities) .? My specific thought or concern is that as the gap becomes greater, for example Mr. Romney?s proposals are accepted, then some people with assets and income and families in both the US and Canada may increasingly prefer to make the donation in Canada to a Canadian charity or foundation as they will obtain far greater fiscal benefits.?

An interesting letter from a number of US charities with my emphasis:

?The charitable deduction is different than other itemized deductions in that it encourages individuals to give a portion of their income to support worthwhile causes,? the letters said. ?It rewards a selfless act, and it encourages taxpayers to give more funds to charities than they would otherwise have given.?

There were 1.8 million US registered charities and over the last 2 years about 400,000 of them have been revoked for non-filing of the 990.? Perhaps the US should do a better job of ensuring that the remaining 1.4 million are really ?worthwhile causes? that are deserving of state support.? We have the same problem here in Canada - there is no obligation on the part of charities to show that they have any public benefit.? Secondly, It is interesting they use the phrase ?selfless act? - while this is true for many, unfortunately increasingly some of the biggest donations feel more like sponsorship arrangements or mergers/acquisitions than donations.? Perhaps selfless acts should receive tax incentives and less selfless donations or arrangements should receive less incentives or none at all.?

Radioactive Fish Near Fukushima Suggest Ongoing Contamination

Bottom-dwelling fish continue to be found with high levels of radioactive elements, potentially coming from leaking radioactive water or contaminated sediments

greenling RADIOACTIVE FISH: Some source of radioactive contamination is causing bottom-dwelling fish, like the greenling pictured here, to absorb high levels of radionuclides. Image: Flickr.com / Brian Gratwicke

The fish off Fukushima remain radioactive more than a year after the earthquake and subsequent tsunami triggered three meltdowns at the Daiichi nuclear power plant. In fact, bottom-dwelling greenling fish caught in August 2012 bore the highest levels of radioactive particles seen to date?25,000 Becquerels per kilogram. (A becquerel is a unit of the rate of radioactive decay?or radiation emitted by a substance.) That is 250 times higher than current Japanese safety standards, a key reason fishing off Fukushima remains prohibited.

The findings suggest that contaminated water is still leaking from the stricken power plant, the sea bottom itself is now laced with radionuclides, or both. Concentrations in the ocean water itself remain below any human health concern but they do pass into fish that swim through those waters.

"When fish 'drink' they take [cesium] and other salts up from the water they are swimming in, that accumulates in the muscle tissue," explains marine chemist Ken Buessler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who compiled the analysis of publicly released Japanese fisheries data and published it in Science on October 26. But the fish also shed that cesium if they swim in uncontaminated waters, as has been seen in tuna that migrated from near Japan to near San Diego, suggesting that levels in fish should decrease over time. For this reason, most of the fish caught off Japan's northeastern coast are not radioactive. But roughly 40 percent of bottom-dwelling fish, such as flatfish or halibut, caught off the coast adjacent to Fukushima bear radionuclides above the Japanese food safety standard of 100 becquerels per kilogram.*

According to a response to questions from Scientific American that was prepared by staff at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, ingesting fish at that level "would only produce a dose that is a small fraction of the dose that people receive from natural levels." For example, as Buessler notes, fish caught off Japan in June 2011 boasted levels of potassium-40?a naturally occurring radionuclide?10 times higher than those of radioactive cesium from Fukushima.

Radioactive cesium decays by emitting what's known as a beta radiation, a negatively charged particle that is easily blocked by metal, plastic or wood?but not skin. In particular, ingesting beta-emitting radioactive elements is "a concern," according to the NRC. "Beta particles released directly to living tissue can cause damage at the molecular level, which can disrupt cell function." Plus, beta particles are small enough to travel far in the body, causing damage far and wide.

U.S. safety guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration permit foods to bear 1,200 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, but the FDA declined to comment for this article. "The more restrictive action taken by the Japanese seems reasonable for the population living close to Fukushima because they receive radiation doses from other sources, including non-fish food, drinking water and land surface contamination," the NRC staff writes. "Based on the FDA and [World Health Organization] recommendations, eating fish contaminated at 100 Bq/kg would result in a small and acceptable exposure to radioactive cesium."

Spears' legal bills may top $1M in defamation trial

By Claudia Rosenbaum and Josh Grossberg, E! Online

If you ask Britney Spears, it's not about the money but apparently the principle of the matter.

E! News has learned that the pop superstar's family has run up a nearly $1 million tab to pay for the eight-person legal team defending her in her defamation trial.

That amount, ironically, is what her former manager, Sam Lutfi, is seeking after suing Spears and her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, in February 2009 for breach of contract, libel, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, especially after what he said were "false statements" about him in Lynne's book "Through the Storm."

Britney Spears drug allegation kicks off defamation trial

The Los Angeles lawyers defending the "Oops" singer include Leon Gladstone, Stephen Rohde, Joel Boxer and Bonita Moore, whose going rate is typically $500 an hour, but when they're in court, about $700 an hour. Additionally, Spears has her conservatorship attorneys in tow, Geraldine Wyle and Andrew Wallet.

There's also a lawyer on hand specializing in appeals in case Britney's camp needs to file one, should Lutfi's attorney attempt to revisit the issue of getting Spears to testify (a probate judge has forbidden this as she is still under a conservatorship).

Doing the math, having eight lawyers defend her will cost the hitmaker around $50,000 a day, or close to a whopping $1 million for what's expected to be a 20-day trial. That's not including all the pretrial hours such representation has no doubt already racked up.

Why Britney Spears won't testify in Sam Lufti trial

And of course, let's not forget Spears spent roughly $1 million in legal bills in 2010 stemming from her conservatorship and other legal snafus, such as the sexual harassment suit she settled with her ex-bodyguard.

For his part, Lutfi was asking 15 percent of the $800,000 Spears earned each month for the eight months he served as her manager, which ends up being about $960,000.

So the bottom line is the Britster is paying either way. However, if Lutfi loses, she could bring a frivolous lawsuit against him asking a judge to reimburse her for her legal fees.

We'll know soon enough.

Take a look at Britney's amazing comeback

Bissau seeks to extradite former leader from Portugal

BISSAU (Reuters) - Guinea-Bissau's caretaker government said on Wednesday it sent an extradition request to Portugal for its exiled former prime minister, whom it accuses of ordering the assassination of a former president in 2009.

Tensions between Guinea Bissau and its former colonial ruler Portugal have soared since a military coup in April derailed presidential elections that Portuguese-backed Carlos Gomes Junior was widely favored to win.

Guinea-Bissau officials accused Portugal of seeking to return Gomes Junior to power, and said Lisbon was behind a failed counter-coup effort over the weekend in which at least six people were killed.

"Carlos Gomes Junior should have the decency to appear in court," Fernando Vaz, a spokesman for Guinea-Bissau's transitional government said on Wednesday, adding Gomes Junior was "implicated in several horrific murders" including that of late president Joao Bernardo Vieira.

He said a formal extradition request was sent to Lisbon on October 1. A Portuguese government official was not immediately available to comment, though the foreign ministry has said it can deny extradition requests to countries that do not meet certain judicial and human rights criteria.

Guinea Bissau's military, led by General Antonio Indjai, detained Gomes Junior in an April 12 coup ahead of a run-off presidential election he was favored to win.

The election was meant to shore up stability in the impoverished cashew-producer nation, which has earned a reputation as a haven for Latin American drugs cartels ferrying cocaine to Europe.

Indjai accused Gomes Junior of having a secret pact with Angola, which had troops in the country at the time, to eliminate the army leadership.

Gomes Junior was released but forced to leave the country under a deal brokered by West African regional bloc ECOWAS that has since been criticized by the United Nations, the European Union, and the CPLP grouping of Portuguese-speaking nations for rewarding the coup leaders.

The civilian-led transitional government this week accused Portugal and other CPLP members of being behind an attack on a Bissau military base over the weekend.

Gomes Junior's office in Lisbon, which claims to represent the 'legitimate government of Guinea Bissau', issued a statement saying the attack appeared to have been a fabrication to 'whitewash' the failures of the current leadership.

He has said he hopes to return to Bissau to rule.

Does Google Think Your Website Is Spam?

Does Google Think Your Website Is Spam?

.

no one likes webspamintroductory3

I think we can all agree: Spam sucks! Everyone who uses the web knows how frustrating it is to land on a page that sounds promising in the search results but ends up being useless when you visit it. That?s web spam. Okay, okay -- I exaggerate. Not every awful website is web spam. Some companies just happen to have bad websites. However, unlike those bad sites, the creators of web spam deliberately (in most cases) manipulate search engines in order to get their content ranking in search results. Not cool.

Here?s the kicker: Let?s say you?re a sole proprietor who?s hired someone to do SEO for you. Or maybe you manage a marketing team, and SEO has always been one of those things you wish you had time for but decided to outsource instead. How do you know that the SEO you're outsourcing is truly legitimate and won?t result in your website being considered spammy?

And we all know how Google hates spam. In fact, I'm sure you hate spam just as much. So, how do you know if your website is spammy? And what should you do to make sure it isn't considered *GULP* web spam?

If you have concerns about your website being considered spammy, here is a list to review for yourself and/or with anyone doing SEO work for you. As you read through these items, ask yourself, "Do I or has anyone working on my website ever employed these practices? Does this describe my business -- even if it?s wasn't intentional?"

8 Qualities of a Search Engine Web Spammer (Who Only Their Mom Could Love)

1) They Rarely Use Social

It?s a fact. Granted, there are people who are spammers in social media, too, but those people are usually a different type of spammer -- their end goal is not to get their website ranking higher in search results. Spammers simply don?t dedicate the time to build relationships with people and, thus, are rarely found in social networks. Help to distinguish your website and marketing from web spam by building relationships online in social media with prospects and customers.

2) They Over-Optimize

The repetitive use of keywords in content, where they unnaturally appear word after word ... after word (you know what I'm talking about) -- that?s referred to as keyword stuffing or, more innocently, over-optimization. Call it what you will; it?s not a good practice either way. Most frequently, you?ll see repetitive keywords in the following areas: page titles, on-page copy, and in domain names/URLs. To prevent keyword stuffing, follow best practices for optimizing your content, and aim to write as naturally as you would speak.

3) They Don?t Focus on Content

Spammers don't care about creating quality content -- or content that is unique in any way, for that metter. In fact, spammy sites will often consist of stolen content, content repeated again and again, or content that has been pulled in via RSS feeds from other websites. Avoid this type of spammy behavior by making sure all the content you publish is unique and compelling.

4) They Stuff Their Sites With Ads

Spammers create the type of websites where more than 50% of the content on any given page is advertisements. Remember, the spammer?s goal is to make a lot of money, and running a ton of ads will help get them to that goal. Don't risk looking like a spammy site. Make sure to dedicate the top half of your web pages with quality content and calls-to-action. Don?t waste valuable website real estate with third-party advertisements that add no value to your business or its users. Google is not a fan of excessive ads on websites, and they'll ding you for it.

5) Their Sites Have Lots of Dead Ends, Pages Not Found, and Broken Links

For a spammer, maintaining a legitimate website requires too much upkeep that they just let pages expire and neglect to make necessary updates and changes. As a marketer, make a commitment to keeping your website fresh and up to date. It pays to do some housekeeping, so don?t let the cobwebs build up.

6) They Attract Lots of Low-Quality Inbound Links

Unfortunately, there is such a thing as bad, low-quality inbound links. The good news is, if you've only ever participated in white-hat SEO practices, you're most likely in the clear. But if you've gone a little black hat in your day (buying inbound links for instance), this one?s a no-brainer. After all, who links to spam, except for spam? Remember: A great source of high-quality inbound links is high-quality content you create that naturally entices other websites to link back to it. Another great way to attract high-quality inbound links is through guest blogging, so leverage your networks to help build a stronger reputation and more powerful influence online. And if you have attracted some subpar inbound links in the past, consider using Google's new Disavow tool to help clean up your online reputation.

7) They Own Lots of Domains or Microsites

Spammers are notorious for not only purchasing lots of domains, but also setting up site after site that consist of just one page each and never gets updated. Of course, there are some exceptions to this, but as a best practice, try to keep all your content on one primary, authoritative domain/website.

8) They Employ Other Traditionally Black-Hat Tactics

These tactics include things like doorway pages, text that matches the page's background color (so the human eye can't catch it, but search engines can index it), and the use of misspelled content and keywords intentionally used wrong just to rank. Hidden text, meta-tag stuffing, scraping other websites for content -- it's all bad. As a marketer, just don?t do it. You know it?s bad, and if you're unsure of whether a particular practice is black hat, do some research, or ask an SEO expert. Conduct your own sniff tests, and if something isn't up to snuff, then don?t do it.

Yes, it is possible to innocently fall into the trap of some of these eight warning signs just because you didn?t know any better at the time -- or maybe because you just haven?t monitored the SEO activities for your website. And while it sounds enticing to be on page one of the search results and generate a lot of traffic, you need to ask yourself: At what cost?

What Then, Does Google Care About?

SEO should mean optimizing for user experience! It?s no longer just about optimizing for on-page SEO (keywords) or off-page SEO (attracting inbound links). Google also wants you to create the best possible user experience for your site visitors. Imagine clicking on a search engine result and actually finding what you'd hoped. That?s exactly what Google wants to happen, so as a marketer, you need to focus your efforts on achieving that user experience!

The websites who succeed at doing this are the ones that get rewarded with good rankings, traffic, and ultimately, conversions. Those who fail or practice any of the spammy behaviors above either end up not showing up in search results (at best), or getting penalized by Google (at worst).

What Marketers Should Focus On

Essentially, you want to aim for consistent and quality content that delivers a clear value proposition and shows attention to detail. Create content (with "content" being more than just text -- think images, video, rich text, reviews, comments, etc.) that is innovative, unique, and inspiring -- in other words, compelling!?

Next, you should base your optimization decisions first and foremost on what?s best for the visitors of your website. They?re the main consumers of your content, and they're using search engines to find your work. Rather than focusing hard on specific tweaks (AKA "gaming the system") to gain ranking positions in the organic results of search engines, focus instead on putting your site?s best foot forward. In other words, aim to please your ultimate consumers: your users, customers, and prospects ... not search engines.

Designing your site around your visitors? needs while making sure it's also easily accessible to search engines usually produces positive results. It helps users find the content they want faster, and ultimately convert. It?s a win-win situation.

How Do You Track All This?

To determine whether your SEO efforts are paying off and whether your content aligns with your users and creates that desired user experience, you'll need to keep track of a few key metrics. Evaluate how users are consuming your content. Sure, you'll want to look at pages visited, but think a little bit outside the box.

  • Time on Site: Keeping track of time on site using a web analytics tool like Google Analytics is a good way to get insight about whether people like consuming your content. Now, depending on your type of content, users may not be spending that much time per page. Depending on the nature of your site, your target duration for a visit will vary.
  • Bounce Rates: Google has publicly stated that bounce rate does not factor in as part of its ranking calculation; however, bounce rate (which a web analytics tool like Google Analytics can also report on) can give you some information about user experience. A healthy bounce rate for a site that produces a large volume of content is 70% or less. There are a few things to keep in mind when looking at this metric. Look at it on a page by page basis, and consider that each page will have its own unique bounce rate. Some pages will naturally have higher rates than others, and that?s okay. You would expect that especially from something like your 'Contact Us' page, for example. There are additional ways to measure bounce rate, as discussed by Avinash Kaushik here.
  • Clickthrough Rates (CTR):?There are several different types of clickthrough rates you can look at, but I would recommend two types in particular. First, track the clickthrough rates of your search listings, which Google Analytics will provide to you if you have Webmaster Tools set up for your website. Generally speaking, you will have lower CTRs where you do a poor job of communicating what your site is about -- meaning your Page Title, URL and description don?t align, or you have a poor site structure. Second, track the CTRs for your various calls-to-action (CTAs) on your web pages. Remember, one of the main goals for getting your web pages to rank well in search is to get people to click through to an offer. Therefore, your CTA clickthrough rates on those pages will tell you how effectively your traffic is getting routed to the landing pages for your offers.
  • Conversion Rates: Once you get people from search engines to your landing pages, they still need to fill out the form and convert! Conversion rates should be tied directly to your business goals. A conversion might be completing a purchase, signing up for a mailing list, or downloading a whitepaper.
  • Social Signals: Social media is about relationships, and your social signals are the metrics that help you determine whether your content is being shared in social media -- and the impact it's having. Beyond tracking the number of Likes and shares for your content, also consider the following (which you can track using a closed-loop marketing analytics tool like HubSpot): traffic from social media (and individual social networks), overall social media reach, and how many leads and customers you can attribute to your social media presence. Remember -- social media influences SEO, so it's important not to ignore that fact.

We have entire blog posts and ebooks dedicated to explaining and exploring SEO and marketing analytics, so you?ll excuse me if my explanations just scrape the surface. One way to improve your site is to look at it from the perspective of your users. What shows up in search results: is it enticing? Does it accurately represent the content of my website? Am I giving searchers a reason to click on my listings? And the same applies to content within your site, too. Give users the information they seek.

Let?s Say You Did Get Penalized. How Would You Know?

If you suspect you have been penalized in search engines for spammy behavior, there are a few things you can check. Start with the following:

  • Do you show up in the search results? You can start by simply doing a search for your site. Searching for your site with the following command (search:domain.com) will give you a sense of what?s indexed.
  • Check your traffic metrics -- volume and sources. Has your traffic remained the same or at least steadily increased? If so, that?s good. If, however, your traffic shows any sudden drop-offs without a rebound, it's an indication you may have been dinged.
  • What types of links come in to your website? Take a look at the type of inbound links you've attracted for your site. Do any of them look suspicious?
  • Are you still generating leads? Traffic alone isn't the only factor to consider. If you've stopped getting conversions and leads without changing much or without reducing the volume of content and offers you produce, I would encourage you to look into it further.

While there are certain steps to take (like this one) if you feel you've been penalized by Google unecessarily, the best way to start reparing your search engine rankings is to clean up your black-hat SEO practices and move forward with a more white-hat approach.

In the end, you want to ask yourself, "What do my users care about?" If you can focus on creating content while keeping your users in mind, all of the above will be super simple. Do what?s in your audience?s best interest and write as though you're having a conversation with that person. Use your website as a tool to communicate, engage, and build trust and authority. That?s all that Google expects of you. Web spammers, on the other hand, manipulate users and search engines, ultimately creating a less than optimal experience for them as a result. Don?t be that guy.

Are you optimizing your website and content with the user in mind?

Big jump in young adults moving out of state

Graphic shows trend in mobility among adults

Graphic shows trend in mobility among adults

(AP) ? Their lives on hold for years, young adults are now making big moves in the fledgling economic recovery, leaving college towns or parents' homes and heading out of state at the highest rate since the height of the housing boom.

New census data released Thursday offer a detailed look at U.S. migration as mobility begins to revive after sliding to a record low last year.

The latest numbers show that young adults 25-29 are the primary out-of-state movers; they had the biggest gain in 13 years as they struck out on their own to test the job market in urban, high-tech meccas such as Washington, D.C.; Denver; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; and Austin, Texas.

In contrast, groups that showed some of the most movement in the housing boom of the last decade (2000-2010) ? working professionals, families and would-be retirees ? are still mostly locked in place, their out-of-state migration levels stuck at near lows due to underwater mortgages and shrunken retirement portfolios.

The demographic shifts, which analysts say could continue for many more years, are once again rejiggering the housing map.

Out are the super-sized McMansions in far-flung suburbs and in the sprawling Southwest, which helped drive rapid metro area growth in the early to middle part of the last decade in places such as Phoenix; Las Vegas; Orlando, Fla.; and Atlanta. In are new, 300 square-foot "micro" apartments under consideration for wider development in dense cities such as New York, San Francisco, Boston and Seattle, which are seeking to attract young single adults who value affordable spaces in prime locations to call their own.

"Footloose young singles are forming the leading edge of the coming migration wave," said William H. Frey, a Brookings Institution demographer who reviewed the numbers. He attributed the recent jump in mobility to pent-up demand among young adults who now are ready to "move on a dime" to land a job opportunity.

"We will see their migration rates swell even higher if the jobs become more plentiful," Frey said. "Families, older professionals and retirees will be latecomers; they have more financial baggage and will need to make more careful decisions about when and where to move."

Richard Florida, an American urban theorist and professor at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, called the mobility gain an important sign the U.S. economy is getting back on track.

"Young people are moving out of their parents' basements and sampling places and sampling careers again," he said. "After living at home for a while, young people have kind of maxed it out. They are heading to bigger, vibrant cities, predominantly, because they're looking for economic opportunity and building their social networks."

About 1.7 percent of the U.S. population moved across state lines to a new home in the 12-month period ending March 2012, up slightly from 1.6 percent in the previous year.

The share of young adults ages 25-29 who moved to a new state was higher, about 3.8 percent. That's up from 3.4 percent in the previous year and the highest level since the height of the housing boom in 2005, when mobility was 5 percent. The 0.4 percentage point increase in 2012 is also the biggest jump for young adults since 1999, when the rapid rise of Internet startups and the need for young workers during the dot-com bubble drove migration.

Moving rates for college graduates of all ages remained mostly flat at 2 percent.

Among Americans 55 and older, out-of-state moves dipped from the previous year to a low of 0.7 percent. At the height of the housing boom, interstate migration for this group reached well over 1 percent, due mostly to baby boomers opting to retire early to residential hot spots in the South and West.

According to the latest data, some of the biggest winners in recent years have been states such as California, Massachusetts and New York. The states were able to reduce much of the annual losses they suffered in domestic migration during the housing boom, when residents left in mass numbers for wider, more affordable spaces in the Sun Belt and Mountain West. The bigger states also continue to gain relatively more people from higher immigration and births.

Broken down by age and metro area, the Washington, D.C., area ranked at the top of destinations for young adults in the 2009-2011 period, rocketing up from 45th in 2006-2008. The area has been boosted by its promise of more plentiful government-related jobs, as well as a continuing influx of students attending area universities and its up-and-coming neighborhoods.

Texas metro areas including Houston, Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, which already were on the rise before the recession hit in late 2007, have remained a strong draw for young adults due to in large part to their thriving energy and high-tech industries. They ranked second, fifth, sixth and ninth, respectively, in terms of youth migration.

Denver and Portland, Ore., rounded out the top five at No. 3 and No. 4.

Separate census data released earlier this year showed that most of America's largest cities were growing at a faster rate than their surrounding suburbs for the first time in a century, driven mostly by young adults. That also has prompted city planners to devise ways to attract young adults, who generally desire no-strings-attached apartment living and close proximity to potential jobs.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in July invited architects to design an apartment building of "micro-units" no more than 300 square feet. The city envisions a future in which the young and the cash-poor will flock to these dwellings, having grown weary of "doubling up" with friends or family in the economic downturn.

In San Francisco, developers are seeking permission to rent out apartments as small as 220 square feet, a little more than twice the size of some prison cells.

Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire, said it's hard to predict how much migration ultimately will pick up given the uncertainty in the economy. He said the people making the biggest moves in the coming years likely will be those who feel they must: young adults in search of jobs, couples with small children seeking better schools, new retirees desiring high-amenity recreational living.

"I suspect the recession has sobered the American population about migration," Johnson said.

The census findings are based on the Current Population Survey as of March 2012, as well as comparisons of the 2006-2008 and the 2009-2011 American Community Survey to provide a snapshot of every U.S. community with at least 20,000 residents. Figures from the 2011 American Community Survey also are used to establish broader trends.

Canon announces Q3 2012 results, operating profit drops by 42 percent to $908 million

Canon just released its Q3 2012 earnings reported, and things aren't looking rosy on any sides for the camera maker: revenue's down 13 percent to $10.3 billion from last year, while profit's tumbled by 42 percent. The Japanese company directed the blame toward the "negative impact of economic deterioration" in Europe and emerging markets like China. DSLR sales fell over last year, with Canon mentioning that its launch of new models like the EOS Mark III and 60D didn't help to shore those figures up.

Why Lebanon isn't headed for civil war

Five days after a devastating bomb attack killed a top Lebanese security chief sparking minor clashes and road blockages by his supporters, a semblance of calm has returned to a country that has little interest in starting a new civil war.

The death of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the police's intelligence bureau, in a car bomb explosion in Beirut provoked headlines around the world that Lebanon was descending toward renewed civil strife and suffering the consequences of a spillover from neighboring Syria, which is caught in its own devastating conflict. Although Syria has been blamed by many Lebanese for Hassan's assassination, the reality is more complex, and the prognosis not necessarily as dire as the international assumptions would suggest.

?No I don?t think there will be a civil war from this assassination,? says Paul Salem, director of the Carnegie Endowment?s Middle East Center in Beirut. ?The leaderships of March 14 and March 8 do not want instability in Lebanon at this time,? he added referring to the two rival parliamentary coalitions that dominate the Lebanese political landscape.

Sunni and Shiite Islam: Do you know the difference? Take our quiz.

Still, Lebanon does face a period of uncertainty as Syria collapses into ever-worsening violence. Lebanon?s communal stresses and strains and the conflict in Syria almost guarantee further acts of violence ? assassinations, random bomb attacks, Shiite-Sunni violence, or possible clashes along the sensitive northern and eastern borders with Syria. But there are compelling reasons why Lebanon will not succumb to the kind of full-blown civil war that ravaged the country between 1975 and 1990.

First, memories of that debilitating 16-year conflict are still raw. The war left more than 100,000 people dead and some 17,000 still missing, a substantial number for a country with a population today of only 4 million. No one seeks a return to that grim and bloody period.

Second, in 1975, the military balance between the rival sides was more equally matched than is the case today. In 2012, there is only one major non-state armed force ? the militant Shiite Hezbollah. With its enormous military resources, Hezbollah could defeat the Lebanese Army, let alone another militia.

The confrontational dynamic in Lebanon today is no longer Christian against Muslim, but Sunni against Shiite, reflecting the intra-Muslim schism that has taken hold in the region during the past decade. Several hundred Lebanese Sunni volunteers have joined the ranks of the rebel Free Syrian Army to fight the forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Radical voices drawn mainly from the clergy are emerging in Lebanon in reaction to the Syria conflict as well as Sunni frustration at the rising power of Lebanese Shiites and a moderate Sunni leadership that seems out of step with the mood on the street.

Hezbollah cadres say they are bracing for what they believe is an inevitable large-scale car-bomb attack ? of the kind that has blighted Iraq and more recently Syria ? targeting the party?s stronghold in the densely populated southern suburbs of Beirut. Yet, in general, Lebanese Sunnis are unable to mount a prolonged internal conflict, especially against Hezbollah, even if the leadership of the community wanted to do so.

Third, despite the factional rivalries in Lebanon, the top leaders agree on the importance of maintaining stability in Lebanon and not allowing Syria?s woes to trigger domestic violence. Hezbollah stayed out of the sporadic clashes that followed Hassan?s death last week, recognizing that the Sunni supporters of the slain security chief were venting anger rather than seeking a war. The Lebanese Army also had political cover to move into trouble spots in Beirut and elsewhere to stamp out the clashes.

As the tensions on the streets dissipate, the rival factions are pursuing their disagreements on a political level. The Western-backed March 14 coalition is seeking the resignation of the government and its replacement with a neutral cabinet of technocrats drawn from neither camp. The March 8 coalition, which is headed by Hezbollah and forms the backbone of the government, refuses to step down but has said it is open to a possible cabinet reshuffle.

The Lebanese have long endured factional violence and have developed a battle-worn resilience that helps maintain a (somewhat dysfunctional) degree of stability.

?Top-level assassinations and instant street clashes that would shatter most other countries are taken in stride by most Lebanese, who stay home for 36 hours and then resume their normal lives,? wrote Rami Khouri, director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut, in a weekly column for Agence Global.

ASMI profit dragged down by weak chip packaging business

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch chip equipment maker ASM International reported a 94 percent fall in profit for the third quarter, weighed down by a 79 percent fall in operating profit.

ASMI, which makes equipment used for processing, assembly and packaging of semiconductors, said weak economy weighed on both its chip processing and packaging businesses.

"While sales, both in Front-end and Back-end showed, despite worsening market conditions, a healthy growth, our results were lagging behind," Chief Executive Officer Chuck del Prado said in a statement.

The company's front-end business involves processing, or production, of silicon chips, and the back-end, held by Hong-Kong listed ASM Pacific Technology , specializes in dicing and packaging of microchips.

ASMI reported a third-quarter net profit of 4.9 million euros, down from 17.7 million euros in the second quarter, and 81 million euros last year. Analysts polled by Reuters were expecting 25.6 million euros.

ASMI's group sales for the quarter were up 9 percent to 409.3 million euros, boosted by a 15 percent rise in revenue at the firm's back-end business, which makes the bulk of its sales. Sales at the front end fell by 8 percent from the prior year.

The firm's order book or orders booked but not yet paid -- the best indication of future earnings -- fell 33 percent to 295.2 million euros sequentially. Analysts had expected third-quarter order book of 371 million euros.

After years of battles with shareholders, ASMI's founder and largest shareholder, Arthur del Prado, who is Chuck del Prado's father, told investors at a shareholder meeting in May he is in favor of splitting up the company to create more value.

The firm made no mention of this major change in direction on Thursday in its earnings statement, nor did it mention the study currently being conducted into the market's valuation of ASMI.

ASMI competes with Novellus Systems Inc and Applied Materials .

Health & Fitness Q&A - Pt.1

  • Personal trainers are expensive
  • Nutritionists are expensive
  • Physiotherapists are expensive
  • Cardiologists and Orthopedic surgeons are really, really expensive

So?to make your life easier, fitter, healthier & sexier? I am starting this brand new Q & A series for HHM.

Every now & then, I am going to email 2 or 3 questions to a group of the web?s smartest health & fitness bloggers. When I have enough answers, I will write up the post and put it online.

Here?s the first installment

Question #1

In your opinion, what is the healthiest way to eat?

Answers

  • Nia Shanks says?.I?m all about simplicity. Simplicity breeds compliance, and that brings about long-term success. I recommend people eat real, natural foods at least 90% of the time, eat approximately .8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight, and enjoy their favorite treats on occasion because banning certain foods rarely works (exceptions include allergies, of course). It truly can be that easy, and I suggest people give it a try before searching for more strict rules and guidelines. Why make things more complicated than necessary?
  • James Stokes says?Vegan would be the healthiest way to eat. Ironically it?s the hardest to maintain.
  • Kodjo says?Eat small meals throughout the day, preferably 5 to 6 times. First meal (breakfast should be the most important one) should be eaten within an hour of waking up, to jumpstart your metabolism. Between lunch and breakfast, eat a snack. Keep lunch moderate; be generous with cruciferous vegetables. Between lunch and dinner, eat another snack. Eat dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime; and if you feel hungry late at night, eat a small snack. Stay away from artificial sweetners. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example if you weigh 150 lbs, drink at least 75oz of water daily.
  • Ben from TDF says?We are convinced that having a varied and balanced diet is far more important than any of the faddie dieting ideas that constantly float around the internet. We all know deep down that if we eat a generally healthy and balanced diet, whilst doing at least 30 mins of exercise a day, we will lose weight and feel healthier. Its just that people go looking for an easier one stop solution instead of trying to change their lifestyle for the longer term.
  • Jessica Ellis says?CLEAN. I have read SO many diets and fads and in my experience, eating clean, whole foods?is the best way to go. It?s easy to modify for on and off season and it is a way of life rather than?a ?diet?.
  • Miz Fit says?I firmly believe when we can get there INTUITIVE or mindful EATING is the healthiest approach to food. ? It took me lots of trial & error (and error and error) to get there but I?ve found it to be freeing and ?satiating? on more levels than merely hunger. ?Now that I?m a mindful eater I?ve found it?s spilled over into my being more mindful in all areas of my life. ?For example I?ve become more an ?intuitive? than ?plannedoutscheduled? exerciser as well.
  • William Lockley says?In my opinion, the healthiest way to eat is to eat foods closest to their natural sources ie. whole foods such as fruit, animal protein, natural fats (avocado, nuts, olive/coconut oils) & foods that are higher in fiber.
  • Srdjan Popovic says? The healthiest way to eat is the way our primal ancestors ate for millions of years. Here?s my advice ? 1 -?Minimize your consumption of carbohydrates (grains, starches, sugars) and highly processed foods and drinks. This includes breads, pastas, potatoes, rice, oats, sugary junk foods, and sugary drinks. Fruit intake should also be moderated. 2 -Incorporate as much healthy fat into your diet as you need. Our bodies are designed to use fat as its primary fuel source, not sugar. ? 3- Consume more organically raised meats, lots of fish, nuts, and fibrous vegetables.?Consume moderate amounts of protein. The best sources are from grass-fed, antiobiotic-free, organically raised animals. ??This combination will provide you with optimal health and leanness.
  • Ann Gates says?Eat a healthy, well balanced, recommended portion sized meal 3 times a day.?A healthy, nutritionally rich breakfast is THE most important meal of the day: so don?t miss it! EVER!?Always give your children a healthy breakfast, and sit and eat with them, preferably round the table, to set a good life long example of a healthy lifestyle. Evidence is that families that eat together, stay healthy together!?Adopt the DASH food plan to ensure that you reduce your risks of high blood pressure and heart disease.?Don?t take supplements unless specifically prescribed or advised by your doctor or specialist for your specific health condition. Use the money instead to buy some fresh fish or fruit and vegetables!?Drink water throughout the day, and if you exercise make sure you drink water before, during and after exercise.?Avoid eating any processed food whenever possible. Avoid drinking soda, sugary drinks or eating anything that your grandmother wouldn?t recognise as healthy, home cooked food!?Choose sustainably sourced, fair trade food if you can afford it. When shopping in supermarkets, try and buy fresh produce when you can, and always wash it thoroughly before cooking.?I have always advised patients to buy the best quality, organic food, preferably locally sourced, or grown yourself. There is no real medical evidence for this advice (although some organic food can contain 30% less pesticides, which makes sense to me), but it does seem common sense!?And always enjoy a little bit of what you fancy, in moderation! This great tip was from my Grandmother who lived until she was 94 years old.
  • Waychaun says?I think the healthiest way to eat is consuming small meals, multiple times throughout the day! Ideally, about 5-6 meals will help keep your metabolism burning.
  • Jeff Green says? The key word being ?healthiest?, I would pick the paleo system. Not because it?s hot and popular right now, but because it?s the dietary regimen that addresses so many dietary restrictions yet still is effective in lowering overall body fat and increasing muscular hypertrophy. It addresses lactose issues and gluten issues, it makes up for the sorry lack of animal protein suggested by most diets, it puts fruits and vegetables as the only healthy carb source in its proper hierarchy where fructose can get out of hand so quickly. And lastly, puts nuts and healthy fat sources back in our diets where the belong and does a great job on nutrient timing where fats and carbs are concerned.
  • HUSLfit says??Here at HUSLfit, we don?t buy into the fad diets and quick fixes. ?Low-fat? meals that come in a box, loaded with sodium and additives, are not how we get down! We encourage people to simply eat clean, meaning to think simple and make small changes like avoiding processed meats, eating more fresh vegetables & fruits, and switching from white rices & breads to the healthier whole grain options.
  • TeamDNA Fitness?says??Healthy way to eat is by avoid junk food all together. What we mean by junk food is anything cheap and processed. We uderstand that it?s not convenient and many times more expensive but your health is expensive so it?s a good investment! Having healthy snacks daily such as fruits, veggies ?or items which contain good fats like?oatmeal bars, granola bars, peanuts and yogurt ar all healhy habits to pick up. It?s important to know whats going in your mouth by reading nutrion facts on all that you eat, something that many dont care to find out. Eating sensible portions are vital to eating healthy so if your plate of food is larger than your cupped palm of your hand, then you?re eating too much. overall you have to stay away from junk foods, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup items.
  • Heather Frey?says?CLEAN. That is, none (or as little as possible) processed, sugared, chemicalized foods. I don?t believe you have to eliminate whole food groups or only prepare your food one way in order to be healthy and I?m not a fan of those that try to scare people into thinking it is. There are 1000?s of studies out there with as many conflicting theories so to believe just ONE is right, and right for everyone, is limiting and has the potential to turn people away from healthy eating. I love most veggies but some I refuse to eat raw. Yuck. I believe in whole grains. I?ve been starchy carb depleted when I pulled way back and my brain power and energy were at an all time low. I love what my morning oatmeal (and sometimes afternoon) does for me. If that doesn?t work for you, then great! Find a way of clean healthy eating that works in your life, for your tastes. I think the clean eating principals apply to nearly every solid food plan. If you stick with the idea that the more whole and natural the food, the better, and that you should eat a mix of protein, good carbs, green and fruit carbs in the most delicious and creative ways as you want, then you?re doing pretty great.

Question #2

For the average person, which is more important?cardio or resistance training?

Answers

  • Nia Shanks says?Resistance training, no questions asked. You can achieve the results you?re after (lower body fat, ?toned? appearance) in much less time. The average female gym-goer spends anywhere from 30-60 minutes on a cardio machine 4 or more times per week. They can build a better body with 3 strength training workouts per week that take 30-40 minutes.
  • James Stokes says?Cardio all day. You can do everything else all day but without endurance you?re hit.
  • Kodjo says? You can?t pick one and leave the other. You need a little bit of both. Resistance training will help you build strength while cardio will help you burn stored fat, and promote lean muscles.
  • Ben from TDF says?We hate to sit on the fence but it?s got to be a mix of the 2. We think it?s strange that most people measure their health by weight when most of us know muscle weighs more than fat and really often what people care about is how they look. For that reason resistance training is important. To really enjoy life and for all the health benefits you need to be fit though, so cardio is probably the most important of the two.
  • Jessica Ellis says?BOTH ?- but an average person just starting out, I would focus more on cardio and then slowly?increase resistance training. You need both but cardiovascular health and losing weight is usually?at the top of the list for someone starting out and cardio is great for that.
  • Miz Fit says?Uh oh. Another one where I?m super opinionated and ?firmly believe.? RESISTANCE TRAINING. ?For myriad reasons from fat loss to functional fitness. Im completely biased though as the weight room is where I not only shaped but physique?-it?s where I found my voice.
  • William Lockley says?I believe they go hand in hand and really depends on the individuals goal. Fat loss, more cardio/cardio based movements. Muscle gain, less cardio but still SOME form of extra cardio to help keep added body fat to a minimum. Personally, I prefer HIIT.
  • Srdjan Popovic says? There is really no right answer to this because it?s highly dependent on your goals. I think for the average person, a proper balance of both can be highly effective.?Two side notes:?1. Don?t over-do your cardio. A short 10 minute session of HIIT followed by a 15-20 minute session of LIT (low intensity training) ? such as walking ? is a highly effective strategy.?2. Always do your cardio after your resistance training. Studies have found that subjects who perform cardio before weights have their growth hormone response to weight training blunted by almost 1,100% compared to when they did resistance training first. What this means is that if you do your cardio first, your resistance training efforts will be useless.
  • Ann Gates says? Both! But in fact a balanced weekly program of the 4 types of exercise are advised: cardio (or heart health exercise), strength (resistance), stretching (flexibility) and balance exercises is what we recommend for the average person. In fact ?average? people no longer exist, as many have long term health conditions or have been inactive for long periods. Everyone, but especially children, should make sure that they get at least the World Health Organisation?s (multi language versions available) recommendations for physical activity to help prevent and treat disease, each week!?What is important, is for you to choose an exercise program that you enjoy, that you can maintain, and that has opportunities to be shared with friends and family. Diseases from inactivity and unhealthy lifestyles kill more than 36 million people each year. So choose a fun, exercise program where you can stay active daily and insure, yourself and your family against ill health by enjoying a healthy lifestyle!
  • Waychaun says?Oh, that?s a tough one, because they both are so important! But if I had to pick one or the other? for the average person, I?d say cardio! I think your heart is the most important muscle in your body, so you definitely want to make sure your heart gets a good workout. With cardio, you can strengthen your heart, while burning fat to decrease your body fat percentage. Then later start to think about building lean body mass, to help burn more calories at rest. But cardio would definitely be the place to start!!
  • Jeff Green says?.Resistance training by far. The benefits are a list as long as one?s arm while traditional cardio (steady state training) tends to be limited in its overall benefits. One?s time should prioritize strength training for its injury prevention, body composition and performance functionality benefits. Cardiovascular training has its benefits for overall heart function and performance application but ?traditional? cardio yields little benefit to a positive body transformation result.
  • Justine?Keyserlingk?says??Both should be incorporated in order to get the most benefits. If anything one may want to focus more on one over the other depending on their fitness goals. (Think weight loss/toning vs getting stronger/increasing muscle mass).?Cardiovascular training strengthens the heart, is great for? caloric burning. It also increases levels of? ?feel good? hormones such as?serotonin, which helps with mood, and positive outlook on life.?Resistance training strengthens overall muscles and tendons which help protect the body by preventing overuse and sudden onset injuries. Furthermore, it also helps protect the bones which, in the long run will prevent fractures, and any number of debilitating diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis, just to name a couple.?Overall, cardiovascular and resistance training combined helps one feel stronger, fitter, happier, and increase overall energy levels throughout the day. Win win situation if you ask me ;)
  • HUSLfit?says??People commonly say that a certain percentage of the health grind is dependent on nutrition and the remaining percentage is based on exercise. HUSLfit isn?t about the 50/50 lifestyle though, and we feel like the following is true for everyone: 100% focus on nutrition AND exercise makes you 100% more likely to succeed!
  • TeamDNA Fitness?says??We think cardio has a lot of benefits but for the average person ,it seems that resistance training would be more benefical. Resistance training? allows you to target specific areas to tone your overall physique while cardio trims the?fat? off the the top and since everyone holds fat differently, it?s unlikely to get the same results.?Another thing is that?cardio is very hard on the joints, tendons, ligamens and muscle so very easy to actually hurt yourself while resistance training is very limited and focused on a particaular body part. Overall, most people look to shed of weight but the thing about cardio is that you burn a lot more calories DURING exercise but when you?re done your body quickly returns to your starting metabollic rate so pretty much you get very little, if anything at all. Resistance raining helps you build muscle which spikes up your metabollic rate even when you?re sitting on the couch doing nothing, shedding away fat.
  • Heather Frey?says? It just has to be both, BUT I don?t think it needs to be just the standard dumbbell and barbell lifting. That?s just one way to work the muscles, but with wave of full-body workouts (CrossFit, Tabata, to name a few) you can do both at the same time. I?ve worked with people who have done nothing but one of the other for years and can?t understand why they never make progress and always look the same. Certainly some of this is their nutrition, but only moving fast doesn?t address the muscles you?ll need to carry you through life on a functional level. On a fitness level, for those who are really going for that athletic fit look, it?s an absolute must. The average person has the same physical needs at the fitness-fiend. Going back to the old car analogy, you can?t just give the car gas to go, it will only take you so far. You have to take care of the belts and bolts of the engine to keep it like new. Whenever I?m asked what?s the best way to workout I tell them two things: 1. Pick something you love. Find a fitness you?ll stick with and a way to move that moves you. 2. Think full-body health (heart, muscles, guts), not just weight loss. Weight loss alone has the mindset of urgency to it, an ?I?ll push hard until I lose weight, then go back to the way things were? which of course defeats? your greatest purpose, lifelong health and fitness. Find the best way to workout that hits the whole body.

Question #3

Tell me about an exercise or training method that:

  • You love and
  • Very few people know about?

Answers

  • Nia Shanks says?.I love push-ups. The sad thing is, everyone knows about them, and most people write them off as an exercise only for beginners. This is a huge mistake because push-ups can be used for building strength, and they?re much more shoulder friendly than barbell pressing exercises. If a traditional push-up is too easy, you can increase the difficulty by performing a more advanced variation, or adding external resistance via bands, weight plates, chains, or a weight vest. The majority of my clients use push-ups as their primary horizontal pushing exercise, and they say their shoulders have never felt better, too.
  • James Stokes says?Intense Abs / sit ups but stopping 10% of the way up and doing a set every 10% to hit muscle people normal pass by.
  • Kodjo says?I love doing V burpees and W burpees. They are advanced variations of the regular burpee routine.
  • Ben from TDF says?Tennis Cardio Training is something we love and don?t think many people will have heard of it. As the LTA say ? Cardio Tennis is a series of tennis-based drills and activities played to up-tempo music on a tennis court. It does not require tennis skills, but is all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having fun.?If you want to really get fit whilst improving your tennis skills, Cardio Tennis Training is perfect.
  • Jessica Ellis says? There is a dam close to where I live and there is a huge set of stairs that people like to run up?and down. Instead of running the stairs (I had knee surgery in 2005) I run up the grass hill right?beside the stairs. Then I walk down the steps to the bottom and do it again. Its my own twist on?HIIT.
  • Miz Fit says? What I love and what I do is something we all know about and yet few of us put into practice. ?Im renown for NOT being hardcore in my workouts and approach to fitness. ?My training method? CONSISTENCY. ?Zero fits & starts as I firmly believe (<?theres that again) they are what hurts us both physically and emotionally. ? I found my healthy living path close to nineteen years ago, shed 35 pounds and have never regained the weight. ?My method is simple: a little bit of something, every single day, until youre dead. ?DONE!
  • William Lockley says? The training method I love is HIIT because it gets straight to the point. The misconception with HIIT is that it?s balls to the wall, feel like passing out type of workout, it?s not. HIIT simply consists of keeping the intensity high. Intensity can take on different forms ranging from tempo to load.?The exercise I particularly love is the front squat to press, sometimes referred to as barbell thrusters.
  • Srdjan Popovic says? One of my absolute favorite training methods is kettlebell training. Not many people are aware of the incredible power that kettlebells possess. Kettlebell training can help you build a strong posterior chain, improve your posture, improve your cardiovascular fitness, strengthen your core, rehabilitate various joints, and shed fat like you?ve never seen all in extremely short and unique workouts. I have a complete kettlebell training guide that will show you how to get started.
  • Ann Gates says??An exercise program that I love is Nordic Walking!?It involves daily walking, and can easily be shared with friends and family. The health benefits are well researched: ?Nordic walking can produce up to a 46% increase in energy consumption compared to walking without poles. It also has been demonstrated to increase upper body muscle endurance by 38% in just twelve weeks?.?Nordic walking is a great exercise for many patients with diabetes, obesity, Parkinson?s disease, and helps with many other diseases too- so I often recommend patients to ask their doctor or health care provider how to find local classes or a qualified instructor. Many people don?t realise that walking is such a great form of exercise, and Nordic Walking combines not only better use of muscles BUT it also provides a great cardiovascular workout!
  • Waychaun says? There are two exercises that I love. The first would be swimming, because it?s a full body workout, from head to toe!! Getting in the water gives you a weightless feeling on one hand, but on the other hand, can provide a good amount of resistance to really fatigue your muscles! It?s great! My most favorite would have to be dancing! Latin dance, Zumba, Hip Hop, all of it! I love taking the classes that keep you moving the entire time, but you?re having so much fun that time just flies right by!! Those are the exercises/training methods that I love!
  • Jeff Green says?I like the use of Iso-extremes as an adjunct to my current training practices. Iso-Extremes is a training tool to where one holds themselves (bodyweight) in the weakest range of motion for a pre-defined time limit. It teaches form and technique above all as the application of said exercise is imperative the right muscles are firing in the correct sequence with the correct distribution. The collection of exercises include iso-lunge, iso-squat, iso-GHR, iso-pull, iso-push, iso-curl and iso-dip. The collection of exercises and their application have been around for years and perfected by the Russians. We use them in the beginning of the workout for pre-exhaust, at he end for a great finisher, or by themselves for field work as no extra equipment is needed.
  • Justine?Keyserlingk?says? ?Speaking of Cardio vs Resistance training, my favourite method combines both in one ? meaning strengthening (very often using ones own body weight or free weights) along with keeping the heart rate up. This could be as simple as combining body weight resistance exercises such as push ups and squats, with a more aerobic exercise such as jumping jacks, running around the block, or even burpees for more advanced clients (which is, in my mind the most full body exercise out there, both aerobic and resistance wise) -?Spin X-fit class is a class that we have started to offer at Quad Spin, the studio I train clients and teach spinning at. This workout entails a similar structure as described above. In this case, we alternate between intervals of short cardio bursts on the spinning bike, with heavier weight & core training off the bike. This structure makes the time go by so fast since it is ever-changing, and also keeps everyone motivated since there is almost no chance of them getting bored!! All angles of fitness are being tackled here!
  • HUSLfit?says??We love circuit training! Nothing revs up the heart rate and demands the muscles to battle fatigue like stacking up multiple sets without breaks! One way we do this is by performing one set of each movement planned for the day on succession, then resting for about 60 seconds after the entire round is done. We?ll repeat that for 3 rounds. This keeps you moving, as some body parts rest while others work. It?s quicker and more efficient than traditional formats, and really gets the body sculpted!
  • TeamDNA Fitness says?A training method that we love has got to be calisthenics. Calisthenics uses the resistance of your own body to build strength, increase flexibility and burn fat. We recently got involved in it ?couple months ago and fell in love with it. The reason behind this is because it requires no equipment or weights, and the exercises can be performed anywhere there is a floor and enough space to move in. The benefits of calisthenics effects are wide-reaching and many people we?ve come across didn?t even know the meaning of calisthenics until we told them. Calisthenics workouts involves using multiple muscle groups in your body instead of just plain isolation exercises. Calisthenics can change your ?overall physique no matter what goals you have.
  • Heather Frey says?Honestly, I love a lot of training methods and wouldn?t tell anyone to do just one. I love the intensity and body workout efficiency of CrossFit (though I don?t recommend it for beginners); I tried a workout at a studio that spends half the hour doing a non-stop, sweat-pouring, full-body circuit and the other half doing cardio machine circuit; I have the Insanity DVD?s when the day gets away from me and I can?t get to the gym; and I love my solid beloved weight training, different muscle groups on different days. Bottom line, I like to feel the workout when I leave, and see the workout in the mirror.
