Futuristic Space Plane Concept Moves Closer to Reality

A giant space plane that doubles as a supersonic jet is closer than ever to becoming a reality.

Skylon is a privately funded, single-stage-to-orbit vehicle designed to take off and land from a runway, delivering up to 33,000-pounds (15,000 kilograms) into orbit. That payload could be a satellite or crew module, its makers say. Under development by Abingdon, England-based aerospace company Reaction Engines Ltd., Skylon's progress has interested the European Space Agency, and the small U.K. firm has revealed to SPACE.com its latest progress.

"We are now planning the next phase of development and raising the financing for it," Mark Hempsell, the company's future programs director, told SPACE.com.

Progress on the Skylon space plane's heat shield, superstructure, aerodynamics, avionics and critical rocket engine technologies is expected to help the European Space Agency compare the unpiloted reusable spacecraft's business case with expendable launch vehicles next year. The next phase

Skylon is a space plane concept with a slender fuselage that has delta wings attached midway. On the wings' tips is the Synthetic Air Breathing Engine, or SABRE.

The "next phase" Hempsell refers to will involve building a SABRE engine and test-flying it. But building an engine will require a consortium, and Reaction Engines is now looking for partners. The firm has successfully tested a SABRE engine rocket nozzle, called Expansion/Deflection, to improve thrust, with the help of University of Bristol engineers. Its results have now been independently verified by the ESA.

Another key SABRE technology is the heat exchanger, which cools the incoming air to feed it to the engine that burns it with onboard hydrogen. In the thicker lower atmosphere the air entering the engine will be hotter than 1,830 degrees Fahrenheit (1,000 degrees Celsius). This air needs to be cooled or the engine overheats.

The air will be cooled to a cryogenic minus 238 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 150 degrees Celsius) in one one-hundredth of a second. However, once the space plane enters rocket mode above the useful atmosphere, the hydrogen will be burned with onboard liquid oxygen.

Future tests

Tested at Reaction Engine's B9 facility with a Viper jet engine from March to April this year, a flight-weight heat exchanger ran for the full ascent duration, six to eight minutes, cooling the viper's exhaust to around 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 degrees Celsius). The next tests, starting in August, will aim for the cryogenic temperatures.

For the exchanger work, the ESA and the U.K. government provided about 1 million Euros ($1.2 million) in 2009. Early work is also under way on the engine's circulators, to circulate the medium SABRE uses to transfer the incoming air's heat, which is helium.

As well as building the SABRE engine, the next phase will see the current Skylon design, called C1, progressed toward the D1 configuration. Flying the space plane in the atmosphere faster than five times the speed of sound requires good aerodynamics. The D1 design is expected to help solve outstanding issues such as how to trim Skylon in flight. Aircraft use trim, meaning flight control surface adjustment, to adapt to changes in aerodynamic lift that occur as the aircraft flies faster and higher. [Video: Skylon Space Plane Delivery]

To control this supersonic space plane in the atmosphere, Reaction Engine's avionics development has reached a stage where hardware standards are being identified. Strategies such as adopting military standards or converting qualified satellite or aviation hardware for the reusable space plane were all considered. But Spacewire, a European standard that originated at Scotland's University of Dundee, is now to be used for the Skylon flight computer databus.

Withstanding the heat

When re-entering, like the space shuttle, Skylon will experience extreme temperatures. However, its heat shield will not have to be developed from scratch; the material already exists. The heat-shield material is a fiber-reinforced ceramic that can withstand temperatures up to 2,060 degrees Fahrenheit (1,127 degrees Celsius). It has already been tested in a plasma chamber by Reaction Engines.

The challenge is that the company behind it is no longer in business. Reaction Engines plans to re-create the material, but also has the option of buying from a French company, which has a similar product.

Under the heat shield is the superstructure of the space plane, which is to be made of titanium-silicon struts. The technicalities of this alloy have been overcome and now the work is focusing on reducing the strut's manufacturing cost, officials say.

Titanium is known to be an expensive metal to process. Reaction Engines is also planning for a shaker table that would shake a scale-model of a portion of the superstructure and its struts, to demonstrate the vehicle can cope with the forces it will experience during the rapid ascent into orbit.

Making progress

Such progress is enough that Hempsell is expecting in a year's time "to give ESA Skylon as a comparable [vehicle], they will be able to do an apples-for-apples comparison, I hope," he said.

That apples-to-apples comparison with expendable launchers will be more than a technical comparison. On July 18, Reaction Engines had a meeting with the ESA's launcher directorate, which oversees European rocket development. Also present were the U.K. Space Agency and representatives from the ESA's European Space Research and Technology Centre.

"We showed them the [Skylon development] program," Hempsell said. "The launcher directorate was less concerned by the technical details, I think because ESTEC are already monitoring that. The launcher directorate felt they didn't need to do a technical job because ESTEC and Mark Ford's chemical propulsion department are already doing a technical job on us."

The launcher directorate's confidence in Skylon follows a technical assessment of the space plane by the agency that concluded in May 2011 that there were no issues that would prevent successful continued development of the space plane.

Instead, Hempsell explained, Reaction Engines' approach was "trying out a standard business model. We're treating them like our first customer, such as an airline's got a requirement, we might not have exactly what they have in mind, but we turn up with the product we've got." Business model

The business model for Skylon is a plan to offer the vehicle as a transportation system like a railway, a shipping company or an airline. Those are similarly large-scale investments in the million- and billion-dollar range, with a return that is spread over many years.

These various technical assessments and oversights led ESA Director-General Jean-Jacques Dordain to speak of his agency's increasing interest in Skylon and the planned July 18 meeting at an impromptu media briefing a week before, on July 10 at the Farnborough International Airshow in Hampshire, England. "I think there is a genuine interest there in terms of what we can do for [ESA]," Hempsell said. "We mostly concentrated on what Skylon would look like in a European context. How it would be marketed and funded."

Another reason for Dordain's interest in Reaction Engines is its application to the launcher directorate's New European Launch Service (NELS) program.

Unsuccessful in its initial bid, Reaction Engines will continue to inform the directorate of its progress while two companies, Germany's OHB System and EADS Astrium, maker of ESA's workhorse rocket, Ariane 5, have been funded with up to 2 million euros ($2.5 million) for the one-year NELS program.

In Hempsell's view, the launcher directorate was surprised that Reaction Engines met NELS technical requirements but without the directorate's assumed model about how the requirements would be met.

On the same day Dordain spoke of his agency's interest in Skylon, Reaction Engines announced at its air show exhibit that its March and April heat exchanger tests had been successful. The U.K. government space minister, David Willetts MP, was present and endorsed the space plane. "The technology has been appraised by ESA and our [UK] space agency, and their assessments have always been very positive," Willetts said. "I've been very impressed with the technical assessments so far."

Willetts added that his government was considering how it can support Reaction Engines further. This could include resolving regulatory issues, because there are no European rules about operating reusable space planes. The ESA's head of chemical propulsion, Mark Ford, was also present and said, "We've been impressed with what has happened so far. ESA expects a successful outcome by the end of the year. For the heat exchangers there are spinoffs for aviation and other industries."

US Adults Are Getting Sicker

More than one in five middle-aged U.S. adults, and nearly half of adults over age 65, have more than one chronic health condition, such as hypertension and diabetes, according to a new government report.

The report said that in 2010, 21.3 percent of women and 20.1 percent of men between ages 45 and 64 had at least two chronic health conditions. In 2000, the rate among men was 15.2 percent, and among women it was 16.9 percent.

Increases were also seen in adults older than 65, with 49 percent of men and 42.5 percent of women reporting in 2010 that they had at least two chronic health conditions. In 2000, the rates were 39.2 percent of men and 35.8 percent of women.

Treatment for people with multiple chronic conditions is complex, the researchers said. By looking at trends in the rates of people with more than one condition, researchers are better able to make decisions about managing and preventing these diseases, and they can make better predictions about future health-care needs, they said.

The increases were due mainly to rises in three conditions: hypertension, diabetes and cancer, according to the report. These increases may be due to more new cases, or due to people living longer with the conditions because of advances in medical treatments.

The report also said that middle-aged adults with at least two chronic conditions had increasing difficulty, between 2000 and 2010, in getting the care and prescription drugs they needed because of cost. In 2010, 23 percent reported not receiving or delaying the medical care they needed, and 22 percent said they didn't get the prescriptions they needed. In 2000, these rates were 17 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

The CDC does not consider obesity itself to be a health condition; rather, it is a risk factor for other conditions, such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The obesity rate in the U.S. increased in the United States over the past 30 years, but has leveled off in recent years, the report said.

The report is based on data gathered during the National Health Interview Survey, in which participants complete a detailed questionnaire about their health status and health-related behaviors. Participants reported whether a physician has diagnosed them with any of nine chronic health conditions: hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, current asthma and kidney disease.

This week in celebrity real estate, Mark Wahlberg's home is back on the market and the home of late NFL linebacker Junior Seau has been listed for sale.

Wahlberg first listed his enormous estate in 2008 for $15.9 million. In 2009, with news of his wife, model Rhea Durham, expecting baby No. 4, the property was delisted. In 2011, the home hit the MLS again, this time with a discounted price of $13.995 million.

Football fans were shocked and saddened in May when retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead in his Oceanside, Calif.,?home. It was later determined that the former San Diego Charger, Miami?Dolphin and New England Patriot had committed suicide at age 43.

With a piled up inventory from the past and long delays in delivering projects, the real estate sector is going slow on new launches this year. However, that ? sadly for the consumers ? has not meant a drop in the property prices as the rates have shown appreciation by almost 40-45 percent across Delhi and NCR in the last one year.

As per the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Authority of India (CREDAI), the apex body for private real estate developers, the number of building plans sanctioned over the past 10-15 months has drastically come down. Delay of realty projects, it says, is to be blamed on multi clearances and approvals numbering over 40 by various departments of the government.

?There are hardly any new launches that have taken place in the last 10 months. And, in the near future also, the scenario does not seem very favourable. Right now, it is only in states like Bihar, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, where real estate development is taking place in full swing. The government policies in these states are real estate developer friendly,? said Lalit Jain, President, credai.

Direct conflicts with farmers in the NCR, like the one witnessed in Noida Extension, have also pushed the builders on the backfoot further resulting in cost escalation of existing properties.

?In the past few months, Noida has not seen any major launch of realty project. However, residential properties are showing good price appreciation. Even the projects which have been halted in Noida Extension are showing price appreciation by almost 40 percent in the last one year. Good demand is seen especially in the existing projects at Noida Expressway,? said Syed Mohammad Amjad, Assistant Manager, Sales, Investors Clinic.

?Realty developers are interested to invest in Noida but now, as per the new guidelines, they are supposed to take land from farmers and not government authorities. Earlier, builders had the option to take land on lease or pay through installments, so there used to be good liquidity available in hand but things have changed now,? he added.

The scenario isn?t much different in Gurgaon.

?The re-sale value of Gurgoan property is not as good as Noida. There are few project launches taking place,? he pointed.

Infinity Group, a cross-border platform known for its strong roots in China, its vast, global network of technology and innovation, and its ?China Outbound? initiative, which supports Chinese companies with an interest in international business, announced today that it has sold Mate IP and I-China Security marketing and distribution rights to Anxin-China Holdings Limited (1149.HK) for US$30 million. The first part of the transaction totaling US$15 million, 50% in shares and 50% in cash, has been completed. The second part of the transaction remains pending and is based on the fulfillment ofmilestones. Meitar Liquornik Geva & Leshem Brandwein handled the legal work.

Mate develops and sells advanced content analysis and transmission as well as management products for safety and retail applications. Anxin-China Holdings Limited is an investment holding company.

?The Mate/Anxin deal is another important milestone for Infinity, as we believe there is great potential for other like deals in the future. The market in China for Mate?s technology is huge. This is only the beginning,? said Infinity Group managing partner Mr. Amir Gal-Or.

Groups Gravitate to Green Lake, Wisconsin | Leisure Group Travel

In 1867, Green Lake, Wisconsin saw its first resort on the lake?the Oakwood. A smart, wood-frame hotel with trademark broad verandas, it was built to hold 75 guests.

English-born owner David Greenway built the resort with its own vineyards, riding stables, flower gardens and telegraph system. It?s said that guests were called to dinner with a Chinese gong.

In 1905 the room rate was only $7 a night, and at one point the resort was able to accommodate up to 300 guests. Kitty-corner from the lodge, Greenway built a large white house in which to retire.

Oakwood?s opening in 1867 makes Green Lake the oldest resort in the United States west of Niagara Falls. Today, a portion of Green Lake?s Oakwood Lodge remains, but the town of about 1,200 has come a long way since its early beginnings.

PEACEFUL AMBIENCE

What draws people to Green Lake in the 21st century is, of course, the lake, which is Wisconsin?s deepest natural inland lake at 237 feet. Its 27 miles of shoreline and nearly 12 square miles of area translate into an abundance of peace and quiet.

Groups of all kinds are welcome at Green Lake. Many hotels and restaurants are able to accommodate group requests.

The primary activities in town are related to the lake: boating, sailing, swimming and fishing. The Green Lake Yacht Club, organized in 1894, was one of the first yacht clubs in the state; yacht races on the lake date back to the 1880s. Golfing in the area dates to 1896, when the Tuscumbia Golf Course was founded, making it Wisconsin?s oldest course.

Visitors also can enjoy hiking, biking, birding, nature study, camping, opera house performances, an annual county fair, a two-day juried fine arts show and Wednesday night summer concerts.

A weekly summer farmer?s market on Fridays in Playground Park offers everything from organic meats and ripe tomatoes to garlic, asparagus, flowers and handicrafts. Other area activities are hot-air balloon rides, horseback riding, Wisconsin?s state chili cook-off and Harvest Fest, which features a food fair, classic car show, music and 100 crafters. You also can visit a buffalo ranch near Green Lake.

The friendly people and small-town atmosphere draw city-dwellers from Chicago, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Madison and Oshkosh. The population swells considerably once warm weather sets in.

INDIAN HERITAGE

Indians once lived in the Green Lake area; the last Winnebago chief to rule here was Chief Highknocker. It?s said that every Winnebago was expected to come to Green Lake once a year to worship the Water Spirit; many Indians stayed at the lake year round, which explains the Indian mounds, burial sites and Indian villages discovered through the years.

According to one account, Chief Highknocker loved to sit on a sun-baked rock near the shore of Green Lake. He was friendly with the white residents and would sometimes carve bows for the children.

You can find the chief?s burial site in Dartford Cemetery. Some say the cemetery is haunted, but the local caretaker says neither he, his grandfather nor his great grandfather?all of whom were caretakers?ever encountered anything haunted or unusual. It?s worth the time to look at the headstones that dot the grounds, many dating back to the 1800s.

GROUP VENUES

Thrasher Opera House?Charlie Thrasher built this downtown opera house on Mill Street in 1910, and today the air-conditioned theater holds several hundred people. Songwriter Jimmy Webb, who wrote such hits as ?Galveston,? ?By the Time I Get to Phoenix? and ?Wichita Lineman,? was a headliner this summer.

The theater first hosted vaudeville and traveling theatrical companies, but is best remembered for the movies that Thrasher showed as soon as electricity became available around 1912. Green Lake Conference Center?Discovered by Winnebago Indians in the early 1800s and then inhabited by pioneers, this 900-acre spread on 2? miles of Green Lake shoreline attracts numerous groups. Founders Victor and Jessie Lawson developed the pristine estate in the late 1800s. New Zealand 232/4 at close against West Indies

New Zealand were 232/4 at the close on the opening day of the first of two Tests against the West Indies here on Wednesday as Martin Guptill spurned the chance of a century.

Things had been going slowly the tourists' way when Guptill, on 97 and looking for his first ton against a side other than Bangladesh or Zinmbabwe, slogged Sunil Narine to the grateful waiting Narsingh Deonarine just three overs before the end of the session.

It was Narine's third wicket and put the hosts back on an even keel after they had earlier looked to be toiling at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium after Kiwi captain Ross Taylor had won the toss.

Guptill had already had a scare when a review got him out of jail when he appeared to have been trapped lbw.

Taylor made 45 but was bowled by Narine, who ended the day with three for 73.

But it was the demise of Guptill which hit the tourists as he was replaced by Kane Williamson, who had made two at the close with debutant and nightwatchman Neil Wagner on four.

The match saw top-order batsman Chris Gayle return to the West Indies Test line-up for the first time since December 2010.

Gayle has been absent from the Test side due to a standoff between himself and the West Indies Cricket officials board sparked by critical comments he made about officials in a radio interview after a sponsorship row.

In a relatively sedate opening the Black Caps, beaten in the preceding one-day series, settled down as Daniel Flynn and Guptill moved the score along.

Flynn had a scare when Kemar Roach made an early leg-before appeal in a slow start as six overs brought only as many runs.

But the pace then quickened as Flynn hit two boundaries off Darren Sammy before Guptill survived a caught-behind appeal.

Flynn hit another boundary off Sammy in the 18th over to bring the score up to 50 before Guptill slogged Sunil Narine for six.

A review then went against the hosts as Guptill was given not out lbw to Sammy following an inside edge.

A flurry of maidens held up the visitors either side of lunch before Flynn smashed Narine to the ropes while Guptill twice did the same to Ravi Rampaul.

As the 100 mark beckoned Narine landed his first Test wicket as Flynn miscued an effort to Kieran Powell at point before Guptill secured his half-century in driving Roach for another boundary.

New partner Brendon McCullum survived a review for lbw but then was out driving to Narsingh Deonarine at mid-off having made 25.

The West Indies have dominated the tourists so far this summer, taking the Twenty20 series 2-0 in which Gayle was awarded man of the series, and the ODI series 4-1 in which Gayle made an aggressive century and half-century.
