linux - GPLv2 licensing and proprietary license - Stack Overflow

You need to distinguish between copyright and licence.

Regarding the copyright, my understanding is that the overall copyright shouldn't change, but if you add code to the system, you can claim copyright over the material you add.

If you make changes and distribute the modified code, then you are obliged to release the changes under the GPL. (If you don't distribute the modified code, then there is no problem.)

So, your last paragraph is more or less accurate. You could add your own copyright notice to the modified code or additional code, but the licence for that code would have to be GPL. You should not remove or alter the original copyright notices. You may not relicense the software without the express written permission of (all) the software authors (copyright holders). The 'community' has no say in the matter; only the authors or copyright holders do.
